Broken Scaphoid anyone?
The "white ribbon of death" is right...
I just broke my left scaphoid this week at Abasin. I have surgery scheduled for tomorrow morning, but was wondering if anyone has had experience with this bone before. Apparently it doesnt get much blood, so the estimated recovery time is fucking huge and depresing. Any advice or knowledge of recovery would be greatly appreciated. (yeah I know I gotta quit smoking.. kick in the nuts)
Oh yeah... it is dumping in Summit right now. Perfect timing.

Is the fx detracted?
Did you have surgery?

Bummer man. I've broken it twice and it really sucks. How'd you do it? Although not specific to the scaphoid, this site: http://www.emedicinehealth.com/wrist...ury%20Overview
is really good.

I hit a rock and double ejected... cranked my hand back trying to brace my fall. I just got surgery yesterday morning. Apparently it wasn't very displaced, they just wanted to put a screw in to tighten the two peices together. If I didnt get the surgery he said id be casted up way longer (half of the time in a full arm) and more of a possibiity of not healing correctly.
My doc said ill be in this temporary cast untill they take out stitches in a week, after which ill be in a hard cast for 3 weeks, then a removable splint for a month. It obviously sucks, but doesn't sound as bad as some of the horror stories I've read in the other posts. Is my doc bullshitting me here, or is there a chance the healing process can go as easy as he says? Thanks guys.

Broke mine after a nasty bike spill. Long recovery time...

I broke mine four years ago. No surgery for me, but I needed a thumb-spike cast for 8 weeks (they thought it would have been twelve). Thankfully I healed alright. I had no loss of motion or significant pain. it does act up once in a while though.
The fact that it heals slowly is a bitch but the important thing is the break was detected. It seems like most people who have chronic pain either didn’t go to the doctor right away or were diagnosed with a sprain.
Good luck with your recovery!

I broke mine over 3 yrs ago and its still fucked because the intial x-ray didnt pick it up and the bone essentially died:nonono2: make sure its done right or you'll lose some mobility.

i broke mine when i was 16. there was no displacement, so it was all god, but i notice that working on the computer all day now, it hurts like hell. i was in a cast all of ski season, and then a removable splint for some time. thankfully, my orthopod was our medical director for ski patrol, and had a soft spot for us. he had me bring in a ski pole and formed it around that. told me i could ski as long as i didn't pull a toboggan :D

Good to hear it's not too serious. Mine didn't take too long to heal - I was out of commission for maybe 6 weeks, but it wasn't too bad. Hope it heals up alright.

I broke mine about a year and a half ago. I dont even have a good story, stupid drunk friend tackled me on a sidewalk. I didnt get it checked out until a few days later. No insurance at the time, paid a shitload to get it misdiagnosed as a sprain.
It still gives me problems sometimes and I lost some ROM, so get that shit checked out by someone who knows whats up.

Bust mine a few years ago , bike wipeout, took more than 8 weeks in a cast but in hindsight it was worth it and I was very glad the doc spotted it. few probs now just the odd ache. give it time.
