video Camera Choices

A couple of weeks ago I decided to get a video camera and a helmet camera to record this season's antics. At first I thought I wanted to go the HD route with either the Cannon HV-10 or the Sony HD cam. After talking to some people, however, I've been convinced that it's probably more important to get a good 3 chip standard def camera than one of the consumer HD video camera's - what do you guy's think, I've heard the HV-10 sucks in low light and I'm not too stoked about having to spend 800 bucks on the sony so should I just go with a standard def camera?

Not a whole lot of low-light skiing unless you're trying to shoot at night..... namean?

Yeah, you gotta realize that even on a gray-bird day when you are surrounded by snow there is actually alot more light than you might think...


I think trackhead had the HV-10, could be wrong though...

If you are running it with a helmet cam you are limited by the helmet cam specs. Your final product can only be as good as the weakest link, the helmet cam resolution.

Personally, I get more satisfaction out of using mid-level cams with FC pro5 filters the high-end stuff.

I look at it this way. (8) 500 dollar cameras VS. one high end HD camera. Eight people shooting footage will make a more complete vid than one cam.

then again maybe, you really want or need a pretty picture.

the true riders I find dont give a crap about pretty pictures, they just wanna see sick stuff.

Hell, Rigging a Canon L-1 with a hard-drive device is one of my new concepts. Being able to swap the Eos lenses and dial up manually. Once I run it through Final cut 5, I find it looking real close to 16mm film

I have a Sony DCR HC42 that I use with my helmet cam and it is small, takes good video and a s-load of abuse. A high def camera isnt a good choice for a helmet cam, plus are you going to buy a HD CD burner (do they exist) or record back to your camera and play from that ?
