Need for Traditional Fatty and Fun Shape in the Quiver?

So, after spending my first solid season on a "fun shape" (189 Pontoons), I'm convinced of their benefits, but also their shortcomings. 'Toons rip when it is about 8" of fresh or deeper, but do lose their luster when it gets rutted out.

That leads me to my question:

Is there room in a quiver for a traditional fatty (Sumo, Thug, Comi, etc.) if you already have a fun shape?

My experience tells me "yes", especially when the snow gets cut up and more variable. I also hate it when I go from ripping the pow on the Pontoons to getting beat to crap in heavier crud or firmer stuff. I also am open to the possibility that I have the wrong fun shape for the PNW, too.

Open to thoughts and experience on why or why not. I am the self proclaimed "Master of Quiver Overlap" , so one more pair doesn't scare me...;)

Depends on what fun shape you have. With 'toons, yes, there is absolutely room. Will hell bents or similair, maybe not. Maybe fats in the ANTs, Gots category, but not sumos.

So, I just picked up some 190 Gots after having skied 183's for 3 seasons. Dig Gots in deep, but "think" I want something surfy like the 'toons, but better later in the day.

It only depends on how much money you want to spend.

to my understanding that spats (and i hope praxis) completely rule in cut up crud type snow, as well as true pow

it seems that this may not be true on the toons

Exactly. Although I have not tried them, Lotuses seem to be what your looking for. Spats will always be trusty in the crud, and praxis and ARGs seem to be there as well. It seems to be that pontoons might be the worst fun shape for mixed conditions and after things have been tracked out.

Caveat: I have never skied the PNW. However, I have skied super wet snow, so I feel like it should be similar.

IMHO, there is no need for both a 110 under traditional ski and a 120 underfoot traditional ski. My big daddies at 108 float my fat 250 ass pretty well. It helps that they have a somewhat progressive flex, though.

Ideal quiver (in my mind):
Skinny ski
Everyday (85-90 underfoot) ski
Comp ski
slightly softer than comp ski for touring (fatter, less turny everyday ski, basically)
funshape (lotus, arg, praxis, spat)

American Express loves me. I can't help but think if you have one fun shape and one ski you force yourself to ski all the time it makes you a better skier in many ways though.

There is something to be said about logging a ton of days on ONE pair of skis and REALLY knowing them. Look at Z on his EHPs. He killed on them regardless of conditions... He knows that ski.

Point is, if you are a good enough skier you really don't need 6 skis. Spend the money on a trip somewhere or take the day off from work so you can ski more. That'll be more worth it.

I think you hit it right. I remember when I first got my Pistols way back when and that was all I skied. They were fine for just about everything, except for speed in chop and crud. I moved on to Explosiv's and solved that problem. I could ski them just about everywhere because, as you stated, that was all I skied.

I think I'll spend most of my time on the Got's and see about something other than the 'Toons for a fun shape. Your point about taking more trips reeally hit home. Why have a stellar quiver if you don't get around a bit to use it?! I'm going to UT instead of getting some Thugs. :)
