Hey Snappy Dressers: I need my first suit, help?

And boy do I need some help. Woodsy, Twoplanker, Hutch and more, help!!!!

I am at the point in my career I need a suit to visit certain customers. I have some nice shirts and all my ties are conservative nice Jerry Garcia Collection.

I prefer not to spend a ton of money, but I want to look good. No Mr. Mac buy 1, get the second for $1 suit. But not straight out of NYC either. Something I can wear without a tie as well, with a nice shirt. I hear that look is the shizz these days.

You guys and gals that have seen me, tell me what I need to look for.

Buy yourself a tie to go with your new suit. Wearing a Jerry Garcia tie with a suit is like paying $1000 hooker to give you a handjob.

Go to Macy's. Something good will be on sale. Let the sales person hook you up. Get the full deal, shirt, tie, belt, shoes if you need them.

The Garcia ties will work for a sales call.

1. You CANNOT wear a suit with no tie. Maybe you mean a jacket.

2. Jerry Garcia ties? NO.

3. Be proud of how you look and invest in a good suit. They're not cheap - at least as much as a new pair of skis. Think new Stockli's, not PE's from Steep and Cheap.

4. Socks should related to the colour of the tie.

5. Shoes. Bad shoes with a good suit make a good suit look terrible. Good shoes are expensive, but worth every penny - because women love great shoes. (Very few guys seem to know this.)

6. You're an adult now, quit dodging the fact and get comfortable with it.

Help with suit, not the rest you picker aparters.

I have some nicer ties than JG. But my JG ties are quite nice, not the run of the mill you see in Dillards. I can get a new tie, so end of subject.

Suit and no tie, got it. Will have to later invest in this fashion.

New belt is covered. New socks aquired. Have $175 put aside for shoes. Not skimping, need comfortable too.

I have buzzed brown hair, 5'10", 177lbs, athletic build with a beer gut (yeah, trying to work on that), size 10 shoe.
I want a suit that will work year around for the first one.
I am thinking I will end up having to spend around $500. Then get it tailored.


Now help me more than arguing about the damn ties.;)

I bought a nice suit (to me) ((hugo boss)) with a credit card awhile back. Had it measured and altered to my frame. I got a three button, because I like the style and I am tall (6'4 ish) Mine is black/off black so it is dark enough to look good without looking like a tux.

Good fabric and good tailor to adjust.

Go to Macy's if you want the best deal. Don't go to the Men's Whorehouse.

If you want a fully tailored suit find an independent tailor and ask for help. I got a great tailored suit and several shirts from a small tailor shop.

Will this work?

Wool. Grey. 2- or 3- button.

Try on suits at Nordstrom. Don't buy there unless there's a sale. But the salespeople there are the best, and will help you figure out what material, style and cut you want.

Try on several suits with a white shirt and tie.
A subtle pattern is ok, but I'd say you want to avoid anything too noticeable for a one-suit quiver.

You will be well-educated after some time there, and then able to pick something out at a more reasonably priced dealer, like Dillards or Meyer & Frank (or Men's Warehouse).

Hutch has the right idea! So far that is what I want the suit to look like. Is that the color I would want for a one quiver for the next 6-8 months if I can?

I second the advice on going to Nordstroms and trying some things on, they have free personal shoppers who will help you with finding the right size and fit.

If you can't do that, I would look for a pleated pant, which should fit around your waist, not your hips. Make sure you walk around in the pants, and they should not rise up and show too much of your socks.

I don't have much advice on the jacket, but it should hang smooth without any gaping. I guess just try on a couple and see which looks best for your frame.

Also, if you want a year round suit, suits made of "worsted wool" are more light weight and can be worn year round.

I hate suits now.... But anyway if you shave and show up with a person that looks like your mother you could probably score the missionary discount at most utah suit stores.

Not shaving till I have too.

My mother in law is coming, so what is the discount? Those suits are too dark though. I think you are jaded.;)

Agree that Macy's throws the best sales, and if you have the time/patience to find a decent salesperson, good luck.

Would normally also advise to stay away from the Men's Wearhouse, except that we just recently had a REALLY good experience @ the Murray/Fashionplace store...

but that's only because we dealt only with the asst. manager, Dan (have his card somewhere) ... he was awesome to work with, was really relaxed & had fun with us, and he just knows the meaning of real service - a rare find these days at any store other than nordstroms. (where we did look at Hugo Boss suits as well)

but when it came down to it, for 1/2 the price, we bought Bear a calvin Klein 3 button pinstripe @ TMW, and bought several other things there.

Shoes... if you can deal with online shopping/returning of shoes that don't fit - try www.bluefly.com - top brands, killer discounts.

As far as colors, if this is a one suit fits all - i would stay with grey or navy blue wool and either 2 or 3 button like Hutch mentioned. No need to get fancy if this your only suit. You can go with a subtle pinstripe if you are feelin sporty though.

What kind of mens stores are near you in SLC? Definitely shop around a little if you can for some deals but don't go with the cheapest ones you can find. A well made suit can last for a long time and if you are looking to impress clients you should definitely invest in something decent.

It is not so much where you by the suit, as who you buy it from. A good sales person who knows his/her shit is what it is all about. Every place you go will have good suits and bad suits, but a good sales associate will get you in the right suit. Mens Wearhouse can be a great or terrible store. Same goes for Macy's or any department store. A good local mens store is usually your best bet, just like a good local ski shop, but you can still get an idiot who tries to help you. So go in and ask questions to see if they have a clue as to what they are doing.

The guy I bought from was extremely knowledgable and made the situation fun. Wearing a suit should make you feel and look like money (in the noncurrency sense)

Burlington Coat Factory, dude. It's the shit. I've gotten some really good deals from time to time at Macy's, but IMO they still don't rival the regular low prices at Burlington. You can walk out of there with a $1,000 suit tailored, shoes, shirt, and tie for under three bills everyday.

And buy a decent suit.You can't come in here looking like this.

Yeah, try and get something that you can mix and match shirts and ties with, don't be stuck with a pinstripe that you can only get one or two combos with.
