Tyson's Corner?

How much will I hate myself if I spend the next two months or so working in Tyson's Corner? I'll be in DC proper during the day most days working, but I'm required to live in a hotel next to TC the whole time (to make sure there's no illicit activity going on between the high school kids at night). At least it looks like there are plenty of buses that pass nearby so I can get the hell out on my Mondays off.

Also, I'd like to meet some of the (in)famous DC maggots at some point if I end up down there.

Note: I have an interview tomorrow at 10am, so I'll know for sure tomorrow sometime.

Well, I know absolutely nothing about TC, but I'm sure one of the other DC maggs w/ seemingly kaleidoscopic knowledge on all the various neighborhoods will chip in w/ good advice. If you do end up there, however, I'll gladly buy you a beer or 5 sometime. I don't think we've crossed paths since the BC summit!

Jesus Christ man, make sure you don't have to commute. That is one insane hellhole of traffic right there. I drove by it twice today and the lines to GET TO THE EXITS were at least two miles long on the Beltway, never mind what happens when you actually get off the Beltway and into Tyson's. If you could commute at like noon and 9:00 PM it might be tolerable.

edit: cj's right though, any high-end consumer good in the world is right there.

Tysons Corner is pretty much all offices and shopping malls, with as much soul as it sounds like, i.e. none. Bitch of a commute to DC from there too.

However, it's only two months, so why not just use it as a base to explore the DC area for 2 months? Now is the nicest time of the year in the capitol region.

My wife works in Tysons. Some of the worst traffic in NoVA. Give me a shout out when you're here and I'll buy you a round to dull your suffering.

I got the job, and I'm flying into IAD either Sunday afternoon or Monday early, haven't decided just yet and I don't think at this point prices are going to change much.

I don't have to "commute" exactly, and it won't be normal hours anyway (for example, going into the city after lunch, leaving after dinner, or heading in at 10 and leaving at 3, etc) so I shouldn't have too many issues with traffic.

It's actually kind of good that there's a massive retail mecca nearby... they have an Old Navy so I can buy some cheap dress pants and a few collared shirts for work. Oh, how I hate dressing up... now I get to do it almost every day!

It would be great to meet up with anyone and everyone, I'm off Sunday afternoon through Tuesday morning every week, basically.

I thought you were thinking of being a corner man for Mike Tyson :)

Sorry to be a nay sayer, but be forewarned, you will still be completely fucked by traffic. No matter what. I grew up there. Been gone 10 years, and it's much worse now. It's a complete clusterfuck.

That being said, I do miss some of the microbrews out there. Old Dominion is good, and the variety of food available is nice. Have fun! ;)

Metro is your friend - go South on Gallows Road (there are buses) to the Dunn Loring Metro Stop and take the train into town - no traffic nightmare. Unfortunately the trains stop at 2am on Fri and Sat. and midnight all other days. Sundays you'll be waiting 15 minutes between trains, too.

Where are you staying - the Ritz at the Galleria?

You'll fortunately miss most of the traffic of x-mas season if you're only there two months... err maybe not.

Living in the DC metro area (and in Tysons for 1 yr), the absolute worst single day commute of my life occured in a two block span between Tysons Mall 1 & Tysons Mall 2; ~2 hours for 3 blocks with no accidents, a slight rainy drizzle, during early December. As bad as it is during the rest of the year, I believe it may hold the worst traffic in the WORLD from Black Friday to Christmas after 5pm M-F.

Edit: On the upside there are some pretty decent restaurants in Tysons for dinner that don't get much traffic b/c few people actually live in Tysons.

Heh, I wish it was the Ritz, we're staying at the Tyson's Westpark (Best Western) Hotel. It doesn't look bad, I guess.

I can also take the Metro out to some other area to avoid the traffic hassle... shouldn't be a problem.

Looks like I'm going to get a buddy pass and arrive mid-day Sunday. Might be able to go out Sunday night before training on Monday, might not. I'll definitely get in touch once I understand my free time better.

Indeed... haven't been to any of the summits since then. I'm thinking about Montana, might make a fun road trip from SLC if I get my act together after DC.

I LOVE shopping at Tysons Corner (Galleria). The traffic does suck, but we would make the trek to meet you for drinks. We usually end up at The Daily Grill. It is the light at the end of the tunnel for EPSkis. He always needs a few V&T's after being dragged from shop to shop.

George was my next door neighbor. He used to give us boxes of business card for free pizzas/pasta dishes, I dont think we ever paid for a single meal in about 10 years of eating there. I know they closed down several of the restaurants, and he might of been a bit eccentric, but it was still a good place, and a funny guy. The people that lived in his house since have been crazy, the last guy owned an internet pornography company, and the current family is incredibly paranoid, cut down all the trees around their house, and clad half the house in copper(which looks atrocious).

The inside of his house was also decorated like his restaurants. Lots of ugly sculptures and stuff.

Its too bad so many of his restaurants closed. I think he's down to the original on Duke Street now. Its been so long since I've been there, maybe its time for a visit.

Unfortunately I had to come back to Boston this weekend to deal with all the shit I left... I will, however, be off work next Sunday afternoon/evening and all day Monday. I'll post/PM something when it gets a bit closer.
