MPC #4. Perspective-> 8/24-9/7.

Thanks everyone. For the next contest I had in mind photographic perspective. Like using a very wide lens for a shot that would normally be telephoto to stretch out apparent distance, or using a telephoto focal length for something that's normally shot wide to squish apparent distance. The other definition of perspective is great also though. Have fun and get creative!

Rules:

1. Photos must be taken within the time period of the contest.

2. You may submit 3 photos during the competition.

3. The contest moderator will choose 5 of the photos to put in a poll for the mags to vote on and decide the winner.

4. The winner will get a happy feeling in his/her pants. (That is a rule by the way not an option)

5. Winner will be the contest starter/moderator for the next comp.

You have chosen a fairly dificult topic for newbies - do you want to show a few examples. Hell I would even like an example of when to use a wide angle lens and when to use a telephoto lens.

Patience some of us suck (or at least I do) and are using the contest as a learning tool.

Sure here are some examples.
Here is a building I've shot before normally close up and with a small focal length. This time I waked about a quarter mile away, and shot with a telephoto lens to make the valley and copper mine seem very close in apparent distance to the subject.

Here is a wider shot of something. Notice how the apparent distance between the pedal and tambourine seems really pretty stretched out even though in reality they are close.

I guess what I am getting at is, pick a subject or event that most people would shoot zoomed way in and instead get really close to it and shoot it with your camera way zoomed out. Or pick a subject that people usually shoot more with a wide setting and instead get far away from it and zoom way in to squish distances.

Anyway if people are having trouble with it I could pick something else.

Hereis another example some dude made taking the same shot with different focal lengths while keeping the subject framing basically the same.

No need to pick something else - I just learned quite a bit more about how photos work and that alone is awesome.

Manatee tail?

Yup. Guess it really wasn't that hard. You just always see underwater shots of them, never above the water line.


For such a big animal, you would hardly know they are there. Guess that's part of their problem.
