Scott p4 vs Gotoma

well I have a pretty good line on some gots(as long as they are still in stock). But I just saw that last year p4s are selling for 299. Thats probably 150 dollars cheaper than the gotomas. Seems like a similar ski. Either way I will be mounting with Marker duke bindings. It will be my pow and slack country ski. And maybe an everyday ski if it works. My BC ski is a mantra 184 with naxos 21's and on mountain ski is the 189 Seths. I like the seths in pow but they are alittle soft in my mind for harder conditions. How do the p4 compare in stiffness to the seths. I would be getting the 191 p4s Ind I'm torn between the 184 gots and the 190.

P4 is really soft. Probably softer than newer seths - maybe similar to older seth pistol or seth vicious???

New white or gold goats are much stiffer.

The Goat is way more versatile - works very well on hard snow.

P4 is super fun in the soft and deep IMO - more fun than the Goat in a lot of ways - very surfy

P4 is soft despite all the metal in it - does not make much sense to me.

I'd spend the extra buck fifty

I had both, P4 is definitely softer and heavier than the goat, and not very good in harder conditions if your looking for an everyday ski.

Hi guys Im new to these forums, Ive been just lurking for some time but now that its time to get skis I need to ask a few questions.

I wonder which of these two skis would suite me better.

Here is my background...


Im a heavy and tall skier 110kg/230lbs and 191cm/6'4'' and this ski is ment to be my powder and trees ski. Ive been sking Völkls for quite some time and my pist ski is the G31 and my allround ski is the Karma. I will be skiing 5 weeks in Fernie this year.

There has been little doubt before that the Gotama is the ski I want but Im starting to question it. Partially because there are so many "new brands" and a few established ones with interesting products (like Scott) and Im also not that fuzzy about how K2/Völkl/Marker/Technica moved production to China.

Traditionally Ive gone for stability in skis as Im heavy and I lilke speed. But thing is I enjoy the trees soooo much and stiff speed stable skis dont do well in trees. Ive also gone for quite little side cut as I come from oldschool 80s austrian skischool background. My natural stands is quit tight with the knees and Ive been working the skis quite hard. During last season when I got my Karma (part of plan with that ski was to have it as a transition ski to more modern sking) Ive widened my stands a bit and gotten my feet out from under my body and not cutting off the turns by stepping into the skis, trying to let the skis do more of the work. I look less like an old dude now.. but still need to work on it...

So what I want now is a fatter ski (new mantra 96 waist is a minimum) that encourages my development into a more modern skier, is nimble in the trees but doesnt poo-poo it self when it gets steep. Pist isnt a priority but at least decent pist characterisitcs is a plus as the transition between the tree/offpist runs shouldnt be horrible. Edge grip should be quite good enough to do hard packed steep offpist runs.

So a fatty that is nimble in trees, can handle the big stuff and doesnt shame it self in the pist. Usage 5 weeks this season in Fernie as only ski or together with the Karma.

Two of the "contenders" on the list are Gotama and P4. Which one do you think would suit me and my needs better.

I typically like a bigger, stiffer ski for shredding the Bird, but I and several people I ski with, who ski similar to me, love the P4. I have the 191's. They are soft and surfy, but can really lay down a nice carve on the groomies. They're just a fun, relaxing play ski. They don't take much work at all to ski. I weigh about 165 with gear.

I'll put it this way: I have 189 Squads that I love and have had for 2 seasons. I have Prophet 130s, I have Volkl Sanouks, etc., etc. I change over my skis almost completely every single season. But I will be keeping the P4's for this coming season, after skiing them most of last. That's a rarity for me.

I'm 17st and 6'4, just pulled the trigger on some P4 191s, and I'm living in Fernie this season. That's pretty weird.

Anyway, yeah, I demo'ed the P4's in an indoor UK snowdome and they were shockingly fun considering how unsuitable to the conditions they were. After a bit of reading and research here, I decided to go for it (getting them cheap helped).

Anyway, drop me a PM in winter before you hit Fernie if you want to compare notes on whatever you end up with :)
