Jackson Pass Questions

Hey all,

Thanks for all the help so far. Just realized it's August thus time to look at buying a pass. Coming from Colorado the sticker shock of a pass in Jackson is pretty severe but whatever, it's Jackson.

I want to make sure I should be buying a pass now instead of waiting until I'm employed to pick up a pass. I do NOT plan on working for the mountain but do plan on working at a ski shop/bar/hotel the first year out there.

Do locals get a deal?
Do some establishments not affiliated with the mountain offer discounted pass pricing?

Most places will give at least a small discount off the august price. A lot of hotels and some restaurants give about a 30% off discount. If you're interested in being a bellman or front desk person the best deal in town is the Teton Club regarding ski passes. They offer a free ski pass for full time seasonal employees. Me and few buddies got jobs there and all ended up with over 100 days and did not have to worry about buying a pass. The pay is average but the atmosphere is pretty chill. If you like waiting tables or have some bar tending experience some of the food industry positions will give 30% off but pay pretty damn well so it makes up for the smaller discount. I would not get a job that gives less than a 30% discount unless the pay is killer. Just make sure that you get to ski/ride as much as possible! Hope this helps.

FYI - remember that if you get a 'discount' pass from your job and you leave the job before the season ends, you lose your pass.

True, that's why it's important to talk to other people who work at a place before accepting a job to make sure they are able to ski as much as they would like as well as how long they have stayed at a certain place. When I got to town I noticed the places that had employees who stayed for more than a winter seemed to make sure that their employees were happy. If you plan on ditching out on a job half way through the season it might be in your best interest to get a job that pays higher than one with a free pass with strings attached IMO. But, if you are a person who plans on staying with a job the whole season I still think the discount helps a ton especially after getting into town and sometimes being completely broke like I was.

I would say buy your pass now to get the august discount and then if you get a job with a discounted pass, the mountain in the past has been great about refunding your pass and issuing one through your employer but then like everyone else has said - you are tied to that job for the winter. You might want to call the ticket office to verify but they did that for me two winters ago.

Just to clarify - I am a girl. Muleskinner was my favorite run at the mountain I learned to ski at.

Congrats on the pass purchase - always such a good feeling. I just saw on the mountain website that they can now mail your pass to you with last year's picture? Pretty cool.

Yep - I pretty much spent every weekend there from two on. Love that place, I heard that it's changed a lot recently. Are you from Maine?

^Yep. I split time between there and the loaf my whole life up until a few years ago. Muleskinner was so cool because its so far from everything else it almost felt like backcountry, at least for me as a kid. Ive also heard its changed a lot recently but havent been back in 3-4 years. The expansion plans look cool, the place has tons of potential, but at the same time its sad to see such a unique place changing so drastically.

I can't remember, but do they do a JH/Targhee combo deal up there too? Or isn't there a Targhee discount if you are a JH pass holder? Rideit might know. Something to consider if you can afford it - it would be worth it.

I bought my pass to my local hill down here in Laramie on an early season deal (bought it back in April) for only $150. Small, local hill, but it's hard to beat a price like that.

nope - unfortunately no combo. However, if you get an idaho falls ski club card - they cost 20 bucks, you get a free vertical value card from Targhee. Which is a great deal since they cost 55/60 and then you get discounted tickets and then they give you every third tix free and after 10 - it turns into a full pass.

Ditto - I haven't been back since I moved out west but I have the best memories from there as a kid. My dad who still goes up most weekends likes the changes - he does miss the painted pony lounge though.
