I never thought of the Green in Utah as much of a fly fishing river. Slow and muddy, a catfish and squawfish kind of river. Great float and camping trip down into Canyonlands NP.
Fish below Flaming Gorge. I have never fished it but have many friends have but only in the spring. They all floated below the Dam. Google it and you should get some great info. Talk to a local shop.Also in August it's the typical summer hatches, TERRESTRIALS, Hoppers, my fav. the Ant, Beetles and so forth. That river is dominated by Browns. They get very big from Scuds. I would make sure to have some Orange and green scuds and a few Ray Charles. I would also Throw BIG String leeches at Dawn and Dusk. I am jealous, I WILL get on that river one day!!
Of course, I am thinking about fish around the town of Green River, my bad.
Get a drift boat, no doubt. You can walk the river bank and wade only to an extent, and those hogs across the river (that you will be able to see) will be laughing at you when you can't get to them.
Floating the Green is the way to go. The A section (just after the gorge) is the most crowded but does fish very well and has ez boat access with cheap shuttles. Though the best way to do it is to start at A, reserve one of the river sites in B (the 2 Grasshopper sites are the best IMO) and take out at the C section or beyond. Did a three-day float 6 weeks ago and only saw 3 other boats during the 2 days we spent in the B section. Great river.
Any portions of the river in the Flaming Gorge area able to be waded or is float tube or drift boat only worthwhile option? Sounds like most of the productive pockets are best reached by drift boating or float tubing. Anyone in tubes?Quote:

Colman has got a good plan. Your gonna have company on the A. Fellow fisherpeeps are usually pretty courteous to each other , but clueless famillies and church groups of rafters are another story.
Another great advantage of being on the B/c section is your ahead of the daily higher water flow and better dry fly fishing.
There are also hiking trials along the b section and the road pretty much follows the river along the C.
As far as watercrafts the big advantage is being able to get your offerings out in front and in the same current seam for a longer drag freefloat.
Not to many people in the old school belly boat float tubes and wouldn't reccomend it.
Poontoon or kick boats are the perfered craft for most.
Trout Creek Flies/GRO (my choice over the Lodge) rents them in a 1 2 or 3 man version which are a lot more forgiving than a driftboat. The Hog Island HDPE drift boat rentable for ~ $150 a day would also be a better call if you don't have strong rowing skills.
1/2 way through the B section is a classs 3 rapid at Red Creek runnable or linable left and Red Creek itself can blow out and turn the entire lower river into unfishable err damn near uncatchable chocolate milk conditions if you get a good T- Storm. So I'd say be flexible in your plans. If we don't get some rain even more fire restrictions will be in place and propane will be the only cooking option. A portapotty is also required if camping although there are shitters at 2 camps.
Am headed up this long holiday weekend will try and put up another tr or condtions.
Feel free to pm me for more my digits or more info. Will be up there the majority of Aug. May be able to fish w/ you or at least help w/ shuttles or extra gear dry bags stoves tents etc.
Green River, UT the town = half way across Utah from Flaming Gorge. Are you talking about flying into Dutch John or Green River, Utah?
If your going to pontoon boat, have a good anchor system
Dutch John. Sounds Green River may not be the best flyfishing destination in that part of the world. May be better off in ID, WY or MT. Thoughts/recommendations?Quote:

Mid august in the rockies you need to be looking for tail waters. any undammed rivers are going to be flowing low and warm. we already have at least a portion of most of the rivers in the state closed because of low warm water.
The green is a good option, the Missouri in Montana below hauser dam is another.
