insurance advice

Since I can't drive for about a month, I wanted to suspend my car coverage. The actual company told me I have to ask the broker (who barely speaks English) about it, and they told me the car has to be de-registered first. I guess this is probably true in NYS, but I wanted to check to see if anyone knows better...

Also, due to an unfortunate incident with the Staties on I-91 a few years back, I still have points on my license which bumps my rate 50%. A defensive drinking (I mean driving) course would take 10% off my (entire?) rate--I remember maggots talking about being able to do this online, but the insurance company said no go to this. Anyone know better?

Unless you send your tag back to the state in which it is registered, your insurance company will not let you suspend coverage.The reason for this is they would still be on the hook if you were to drive the vehicle during that time and have an accident. DUI's are expensive. Learn from this.

What MRW said, for a month, it's probably much easier just to pay it than to go throught the hassle of deregistering it and re-registering it.

Having a gap in your insurance coverage can leave you uninsurable by many insurance companies. I would not recommend it. If the time period was longer a change in your coverage and deductable would be a better idea than going uninsured.

Even if you aren't driving, do you really want to leave your vehicle uninsured in Manhattan?

It's hidden away in someone's lot in Queens, so no worries there. And my car has no collision on it anyway, a decision you'd understand if you saw the car.
Also, no DUI or anything like that--just some overzealous Staties who pulled me over because of what the car looked like, and discovered a problem with my (then) registration.
