camping question

I am camping in British Columbia next weekend.

How do I stop bears, cougars, and mountain lions from going through my stuff?

All joking aside, I am seriously concerned about the bears.


There are ~7-9 of us going for 2 nights, and the BC Parks has the campground listed as $14/night. Is it OK to have 9 people on 1 site in 3 tents?

I have a cooler that can hold a maximum of 6 cans of beer. I am planning on bringing a bag of fruit, a loaf of bread, a block of cheese, 12 warm beers, said cooler (with said block of cheese in it), a sleeping bag, a tent, a towel, a change of clothes, a flash light, and a lighter.

Am I committing a camping faux pas? Is there some item that is required/expected of every person?

Create a triangle with the points about 100 yards apart. One point to cook, one point to hang food and the last to sleep.

Take a gun. .44 cal. or better. Hang food in the trees. Any girls going? If they're in their "cycle" that'll bring bears too. Have fun.

Well, to stop cougars you must not take showers for a week, ensure that you do not have a high paying job (especially in risk management), avoid carrying experimental drugs of any kind and a pookah shell necklace, do not work out your abs or pecs nor even flex in any direction. Avoid any campsites that have a "thirty and flirty night" Do not ask for a cigarrette from any woman at the bar, avoid any woman who orders a cab or merlot by the glass.

you've no reason to be concerned about Canadian beers

Just make sure to wear a condom around the Cougars.

Are you car camping? Keep it all (this mean ALL) in the car. Otherwise put it all (yes ALL) up the provided pole. I think you'll find it is one tent per site.

for car camping? really? what about all the beer drinking and spilling around the fire?

if bears are an issue there, they will have bear proof containers/poles to store stuff. If they don't, then they mostly likely haven't been a problem. Leave the food in your car. Keep a tidy campsite. Don't leave shit on the table, it'll attract bears, but it'll also attract a bunch of other small varmints that are a real pain in the ass. Also, don't take food to bed, whether you're car camping or not.

If you're backpacking, do the triangle bit. Also, hang your food, or preferably, store it in a backpacking bear canister.

Chicks on their period attracting bears is untrue.

Mountain lions and cougars will get your ass if they want whether you got food around or not.
But they won't.

From what I understand a study 20 years or so back found that black bears arn't attracted to women on thier period, brown bears and grizzly bears arn't likely to be attracted (they couldn't make a conclusion), but oddly enough Polar Bears are. I think they had a copy of the study on Yellowstone's webpage somewhere. That said if you are taking chicks, just make sure that certain products are treated just like food if your in brown bear country just to be safe. Damn it must suck to be a woman.

yes, by all means do ask the intarweb forum for bear safety: i mean, close to 0.001% of the forum members can actually give you better information than the park management itself, and that's a pretty high percentage!

Let me get this straight. You have 9 people going camping for two nights and you are bringing six beers? Where are your priorities at anyway? :eek:

keep a clean camp. Keep food where critters can't get in to it. Take more than 6 beers.

In the BWCA and Quetico Provincial park I always hang up the food pack from a tree and away from the trunk of the tree. The main reason is bears. I've come back from a day of canoes only to see a bear getting ready to cross the narrows going after our camping site. We try to get the pack if possible about 15 feet off the ground and 8 feet from the trunk. To do this we use two ropes. One to raise the pack and the other to pull it away from the trunk.

Two of the people going are notorious freeloaders. They are going to learn the hard way the first night that I am done helping them out. They will be told how delicious the beer is though.

I am not sure if it is backpacking or car camping. I will do that triangle thing though. Thanks.

You really don't need to do the triangle thing if its car camping.

But, any and everytime you backpack, do the triangle bit.

If you do the triangle bit car camping, the freeloaders will take your beer and it will be okay, because the triangle bit car camping is silly.

Besides, if they have bear proof storage and a picnic table to put your camp stove on, it would be horrible to try to drag the chained down picnic table 100 yards away to cook, and your tent (100 yards away) might end up in somebody else's site.

If bears are a problem, and they are charging you 14 bones a night, they will have guidelines to follow.

But as I and others have said, keep a tidy campsite. That'll save you from bears, and all the other pain in the ass critters running around.

besides, if it isn't car camping, don't bring 6 beers. You don't want to haul that on a backpacking trip. 6 beers=heavy. bring weed. and whiskey.
