Any suggestions on a good, fat ski I would like?

Here's the situation: I've been skiing on 188cm Volkl G4s for most of this season after blowing up a couple of other pairs of narrower, lighter skis. I like skiing them just about anytime except in deeper slush and in trees. They're a bear to get through moguls, but I can generally force the G4s enough to get through 'em.

In the slush, I sink (and stink) really bad with them. It made for at least one excruciatingly bad day in avy prone b/c, where I couldn't move at all. It also could be because I'm a biggish guy (5'10" and about 200 lbs.).

What I'm looking for is something wider with a shorter turning radius then the G4s (they ski more like a GS ski then an "all-mountain" ski). At the same time, I still want something that can handle speed. Any suggestions? (Is this asking too much?)

When I read the first part, I was about to say Seth Pistol/Blue Noodle/Scratch BC.

Then I read the second part and was about to say Explosiv.

I don't think you're going to find a shorter radius ski that can rip it up at speed that is ALSO wide. Just me opinion though.

I think it's a trade-off...in slush/crud/heavy pow I believe you would actually enjoy morey a wider ski with straight sidecut. A turn of any radius is easier since you float well, and can scrub speed by just schmearing/buttering your turns.

Then when it's getting harder the sidecut is nice...with straight planks you just don't carve short turns that easily (e.g. narrow steeps on hard pack). On groomers you can always do gs turns, and I guess any of the "real"(except Spatulas!?) fats will rail quite well unless it's really really icy.

Well...you probably knew this already. But I would recommend instead of more sidecut less sidecut! 05 Gotama maybe...it still has some sidecut, and with that width you get the extra float for the conditions you described?

I have a suggestion - the Dynastar Legend 8000.
80 mm waist w/ a 20m radius.
rips groomed and crud.
fantastic everyday ski

I like my Dynastar BIGs (now Inspireds). Not a huge sidecut but a soft tip and tail makes turning easy and fun (sidewall construction underneath with cap construction at the tip and tail). If they're too soft for you then maybe the Super Nobis which is similar but stiffer (I haven't skied that one).

I never said the Pistols couldn't handle speed. They just don't mach on groomers like an explosiv or G4, his current ski.

All Fats can handle speed to some extent, its all relative. The Pistol is purty good, but it doesn't have the stiffness/crud busting ability of a stiffer, burlier ski like the explosiv.

and i don't think i ever said i didnt' like morrison's style. imho, hes the best freeskier pro. ;)

If you want a great, stiff, burly fat ski, try the Stockli Asteroid/StormRider DP.

The Stormrider DP has a teensy bit more sidecut, but they make a great fat ski.

If you want a softer ski like the Pistols or even the blue noodles, Stocklis are not for you.
