I don't roast my own, but I am a coffee enthusiast, and this looks interesting.
thinking about it too...
another source --> http://www.breworganic.com/Coffee/coffee.htm (Great organic beer ingredients here, too. Check out the sale items: buy a roaster or homebrew kit and get a $20 gift cert.)
One of my buddies does it and is quite good at it. He would bring it in for work...
He preferes roasting over the gas flame stove, but will roast on the grill as it tends to smoke a bit.
I do it. Not all the time, but when I can't get the good quality beans I like, then I fire up the roaster, and do my own.
I prefer the sc/co method as a reasonable cost, bulk roaster. I started with the air popper, and think that is a good low commitment method. I soon tired of having to so many roasts to keep enough coffee in the house though.
Overall, I feel that if I can get professionally roasted coffee from one of my preffered roasterys, then I will go that route. That's often not an option here though.
Sweet Maria's is a very good business to deal with.
I've been roasting my own for nearly 3 years now. If you have freshly roasted beans and a good (commercial quality) burr grinder, there's no comparison. And I'm paying about $5.00 a pound--like to see starbucks or peet's compete with that. Sweet maria's liquid amber blend is killer!
If you really like coffee, try this: http://cafebritt.com/ Costa Rican coffee not avail. in stores in the USA. A very reputible company. I order from them all the time. If you've ever been to CR, you know the coffee.
Borrowed my co-workers Hottop roaster and did a few batches with sweet marias beans.
Can't deny that it made great coffee, but it was more work than I wanted to deal with....
that alone would be worth it. but as far as price, costco has an awesome burundi french roast thats better than star bucks and costs 3# /$10. but peets is the best
if you are going to be snobby like that, you should also make sure your coffee is served in style.
