Speaking of pirates - I guess there's a myth that the eye patch was to keep one eye always light sensitive for going down into the cabins without stumbling around by switching the patch to the other eye, etc...

Saying Dorset is in the Cotswolds is a bit like saying Mammoth Mountain is in Death Valley. Reasonably close but still quite wrong. Many of the pirates came from Dorset, Somerset, Avon, Devon and Cornwall where people still talk like pirates. Hollywood likes to claim a bunch of stuff for itself but it can't have that one.
