Your favorite thing about fly fishing?

There are really so many things I love, but Ill start the list and end it with what I think my favorite thing is.

-Tight, smooth loops. (duh)
-Watching the leader and tippet unroll so your dry barely makes a wake.
-Seeing water spray off your reel either when you stip off some line, but preferably, when a fish takes off on a screaming run.
-That sound your reel makes when a fish does go off on a screaming run.

and my personal favorite, not sure exactly why, but

-Throwing out a solid cast at distance, and watching you clear the rest of your line, and the way it "slaps" the rod blank when youve done it right.

Even if your not actually "catching" there is the satisfaction of making good casts"
Watching a fish come up and eat some foam/feathers/thread that you created.
Its all about the marketing. "A river runs through it" that shit is cool;)

Something that most white men don't have, rhythm.

The different way fish hit the flies versus casting lures. It seems to be a much more natural take.

There are so many, but one I happened to be thinking of today is watching a 20+" trout make a little wake just before taking a little gulp on a 24.

1. Collecting more gear
2. Having an excuse to do something outdoors and/or travel
3. It gives me something in common and allows me to socialize with the camouflage-wearing crowd
4. Like linux and telemarking, it has simpler mainstream alternatives but I like a challenge.

I'm just saying it's not necessarily easier, just better, and so much more satisfying.:D

catching a fish on a fly that my 2 1/2 picked out then showing him said fish with fly in mouth and seeing the look on his face.....completely priceless.

I think the thing I like most about fly fishing is that they don't talk about it on the ski/snowboard forum.

Fishing dries has continued to keep me fly fishing. Its such a crazy cycle of deception that takes place when witnessing a trout hold its breath, come to the surface, and take my fly.

That and I hate/suck at nymphing.

My favorite is waking up early,enjoying a cupof bad coffee on the bank of a stream while the fog and or mist rises. Then walking further than anyone else is willing to and reaching my favorite little run just as a small hatch is starting to come off. At this point,being patient enough to sit and watch how and what the fish are feeding on, while a deer comes through the woods and is just a little surprised to see me, still enjoying my coffee, and instead of running, casually slips back into the woods.

Trying to spot fish (which IMO is the hardest thing about fly fishing) and 2nd on the wake or flash when a big fish says FUCK YOU I'm going to eat you! Hopper time is my fav.

Tough question to answer.

For me it would probably be the process of looking at a good map, finding a new place/stream to explore and heading out. Something about a new river or lake where you are likely to be the only one around is the most satisfying part of fishing. I find myself doing it less and less...I guess new places are getting farther and farther away. Maybe it's time to move?

With an open mind you can do it almost anywhere. Trout are my passion but I have had equal fun chasing bass (fresh/salt), pike, carp and warm/cold salt species.

Watching a trout suck down a dry fly.

Wading - feeling the current against your legs, the sound of the water.

Scenery.

Try spot fishing for Steelhead. That is fun.


My favorite is the Salmon fly hatch. That has to be my favorite. Aggressive fish hitting BIG flies on top. :biggrin: :biggrin: :biggrin:

The mend
The drag free drift
The line control
The set
The fight.
The reward is priceless, worth every cent of that overpriced gear.:D
