How to properly chute a Grizzly in Colorado

1. Wake up really early in the morning, pack your chutin' gear, and make sure you are on the trail around first light:

2. You have to be on the lookout for the Grizzly at all times:

Allright, so for the past couple of seasons (last February especially), I've heard everyone talking about the dreaded dust layer that has a tendancy to blow into CO from the Southwest, reaking havoc on the snowpack's appearance and longevity.

However, I've never been able to identify the dust layer while in the mountains (i know, it should be obvious, eh - the snow isn't pristine white, right?). My question is whether the closer ridge in the above photo (upon which there are prominent releases) is an example of the dust layer, or if the yellowish tint is just bulletproof snow?

Nice work Dave, when I was up there last year I was wondering if that line might go in a different season, apparently that answer is yes.

On our way back down the pass an old man was standing in the middle of the road waving his arms. When we stopped he told us to proceed at our own risk because there was a car about to blow up around the corner. I looked over at hikeforturns and we both gave the "WTF" look and decided to keep going to check it out. Just as we got around the corner this dude was walking up the side of the road with a pissed off look on his face. A little ways past the guy we come across this VW Jetta engulfed in flames. Have no idea what happened, but figured it was the angry dude's car. Couple of minutes later Clear Creek Fire Rescue comes hauling ass up the pass to put out the fire.


Yeah, we exited via Dave's wave. It was firm for most of the way with some nice corn. We were back up at the truck by 11am.

Hah - I'd love to know that guy's story.
Reminds me of a scene from Berthoud Pass a couple years ago. We got back to the car after a couple runs and were having a drink and eat when we noticed a van pull up next to the porta-toilets right next to us. Two guys came around to the back door and opened it. Then we saw flames leaping up from the back and gas or something drip down onto the ground, igniting and they started to try to smother the flames with their jackets. My buddy turned the engine on and quickly pulled to the other side of the lot in case they exploded.

dave, why don't be original and ski a line you haven't already skied this winter? ;)

yeah, I am pretty sure that's the dust layer.
We saw several wet releases the day before on that layer.

Thanks for the instructions on how to chute a grizzly ;) I'd rather omit step 9 though even though my car IS pissing me off! (it's back in the shop today with a split axel boot... I had smoke coming out of my car on the S. Colony Lakes road this weekend... damn Subaru!) :)
