Pro/Team Sanouk? (Squaretail et al)

The guy I bought my Sanouk from told me they were some kind of slightly stiffer team version. Does anybody know if such a ski existed and how much it differerd from the regular Sanouk?

To me it does not matter much since I've now used the ski and like it a lot as it is, but it might be good to know when discussing the performance of the ski with others.

My ski is the wook look version and I have not done any direct comparasions with other Sanouks. My ski does have a pretty burly visual fibre glass layer close to the top skin, but that maybe applies to all Sanouks.

Most of the "team" doesn't ski Sanouks (or ever did, for that matter.) They ski Sumos and Gotamas and will be transitioning to Katanas.

Thanks Squaretail. Actually, the Swedish team guy I bought them from never skied it either - it was still in wraps. I did hear Sverre Liljequist skied them some though when he was on Völkl so that is why I thought my sellers words about team version might be true.

Anyway, I liked the ski for pow despite that I'm normally on Explosives. I will definitely keep it even though a Katana is also on the way.

Since we are talking about Sanouks, Squaretail, were the blue topsheet, buddha Sanouks a limited run? THANKS

the blue buddha was just the first version of the sanouks. Prolly the best graph, IMVHO

and this first genereation sanouks were a bit softer than the newer ones...

Guess they were a "limited" run... As it was the 1st time they made those skis, most likely the next year, tehy made more Sanouks because of the demand...

And, and also true that the blue ones feel a tad softer... Still, I ain't complaining if I'm skiing soft snow:p.

When the Sanouks were introduced, I heard numbers around a couple of hundred pairs for Europe. I don't know how many that were actually produced.

I have also noticed that in pictures, the blue 1st version are definitely longer than any others that followed, including current production models.

While I cant guerantee 100% that there might not have been a longre proto or something produced at som stage, all production Sanouks, including the blue ones, are 193cm. In pow, it might just be the most nimbra and manouverable 193cm ski produced though.

All the same size and more or less the same stiffness. Using super scientific hand flexing, there seems to be more difference between skis within a pair than between different model years. They feel the same when skiing.


But, I had a shop tell me than that the wood top sheet ones were the softness. I think the dude just demoed a soft pair. I have also noticed the ski soften a bit after ~15 days.

Hit Me...make sure you write a full review comparing the Katana to Sanouks, Explosivs, & Mantras when you get them and get a chance to try em out. can't wait to hear the gospel.

The blue ones were indeed the first Sanouks, and there are very few of them in existence. There were less than 75 pairs sold in the US and less than 200 on the whole planet.

Well, the skiing season it probably over for me now when the windsurfing season begins here in Sweden, so I doubt I'll be skiing the Katana until next season. I do have some comments on the Mantra-Explosive-Sanouk after three weeks of Verbier skiing though if you're interested in that old news.

Heh... I bought Greg Tufflemire's blue nukes back in the day. I think Huckwheat has them now. I had seperation anxiety and got another pair of unmounted blues this year. For a pure soft snow ski I really really love these. Sled ski of choice this year.

Just because I'm interested in the "truth" about this.

Völkl's PR-department said, when the blue Sanouk was introduced, that they were built by hand in their race-department and that only 190 of them would ever be built.

Was this true? Anyone?
Seems like this would explain any differences in feel and/or raise their value as collectors items, as some have claimed they will become.

I've fondled a few pair over the years. Since NZ gets new Volkls before the US, I almost bought a pair of the blue Sanouks on two occassions years back. All of them were the same soft flex.
