I have some older Grivel G12 crampons like this:

Can I use these with a boot like a Scarpa Tornado? Or do a need a crampon with the bail on the toe too?

yup I've managed to get the same strap-type setup into alpine boots, Dynafit TLT 700's and F1's with no problems
I use attachments like those for my sabretooths(courtesy SAC over the summer) on my denalis and have no problems. In fact, they stay on more snuggly than my crampons with a toe bail/wire which I found surprising. Only downside is they are a little harder to put on getting the straps on correctly, but its no big deal.
Bingo... You need to tweak the front-bails on step-in cramps to fit yer boots. The semi step-in system Bossas has, is a lot more forgiving and most of the time more than enough...
Basicly you'll only need step-ins for high grade ice and mountaineering plus mixed... Or if you have tele's or numerous boots that you plan on using the cramps (and all have also front-welts but about the same toe "profile").
Thanks. I was gonna sell these, but maybe I'll keep them. Not sure when I'd need them, but I'm the kind of guy to keep gear "just in case".
i've used semi autos with g-rides no problem
