Moving Out West... Fill Me In

So, I graduate college in May, and like any east coaster, I long to move out west. I will have a teaching degree, but am pretty sure that its not for me. I got sucked into the college thing by my parents/high school advisor, and loved the lifestyle too much to drop out. I have multiple years experience working in a shop and instructing (in the ski industry side of things) and have worked at a summer camp for kids/adults with developmental disabilities, a 4x4 fabication shop, and well, I do have that all important piece of paper.

Problem is this. I am still clueless on where to go and how to do it. I will have student loans I need to start paying off, so ability to live and ski cheaply are a must. I have no qualms sacrificing living accomidations if it means I can ski somewhere awesome. Just because my parents are cosigned on my loans is not a reason for me to slack off. I chose to stay in school, so those do need to get taken care of.

So Im essentially looking for beta on where a good place to ski, work, and live is. I am an open book.

no matter what, Colorado would be a terrible choice. Do not waste your time coming here, as we all hate it and would prefer to live in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan or something....

A lot to be said for the UP. The busiest traffic day is like 4am on a sunday morning in denver...more deer than people...Buy a house for under $50,000....nah, go to Colorado...

It sucks out here bro. It's too expensive, and it's already been ruined by too many east coasters with the same idea. Stick to Smuggler's Notch and fill us in on the conditions in case we want to move out there.

You JONG. There are so many jobs around it's not even funny. When you get connected and get "local" you then have a line on the better shit. In the mean time, 4matic said it best. Maynot be your ideal, but it gets you grounded.



Dude, only every 10th response will have merit here. You will however, have the option of deferring your student loans for up to two years I believe. So that'll be one issue you won't have to contend with immediately. You will be responsible for the interest. That, at this point, is still able to be written off on your taxes.

FWIW, there's a great Adaptive Ski School at Alpine Meadows. If you do end up in North Tahoe, they may have a job for you given your combination of sped and ski school training. Tahoe isn't cheap, but you can live frugally if you try hard. Its possible to get around w/out a car if you live in Tahoe City or maybe even Kings Beach (less so IMO in Truckee since most housing isn't w/in walking distance of a grocery store). Its a year-round destination so there are summer and winter jobs. Despite the stoopid comments in some posts above, there are plenty of maggots in Tahoe who will help you out with trying to find a place to live and a job.

I don't miss NH at all. Although it is fun to visit Lake Winnipesaukee every August with the kids.

I was actually just offered a job at a hotel in Snowmass...But they would want me out there by June 1st. The money is good, the hotel looks good, and the job looks good...but I dont think I am going to take it based soley on the fact I would be taking off my cap and gown and hopping on a plane. Girlfriend still has 2 years of school left and (while its not the sole reason) Im not really ready to get out of dodge that quickly...


So, still looking. Might stick aroud NH for the summer as some jobs in town have recently started hiring full time.

What hotel?

Even before I saw your last post, I was going to tell you to move out in the spring. A lot of people in ski towns, especially people like you, that are trying to live cheaply, work thier asses off during the summer so they can get a bit more flexible job and ski in the winter. If you come out sooner rather than later, you will have a place, and a line on better winter jobs by the time ski season starts. There will probably even be some snow left up in the high country in june too.

So you were offered a job in Aspen (Snowmass) that pays pretty well and you're going to turn it down???? Are you afraid you're going to miss some play time or something? You'll soon realize that living in Aspen is full-time playing. :)

Why don't you buy a condo in Wankerville?

There aren't many places better than the Whites in the summer.Beautifull mtns. and yes they are mountains, don't let anyone tell you different. When I went West this past fall I was disappointed by the Colorado Rockies I saw from the train. No more spectacular than Franconia Notch or Crawford or any of the other notches in N.H. Less so even. The snow is a little more dependable out there but you will have to adapt to giving up small town life. I was in SLC and there was nowhere to hide. Your in one big valley between the Oquirrhs(sp) and the Wasatch, all the roads are strait and flat for the most part. In New England you travel around mtns and hills with every drive you go on. Its more amongst the mtns. Also the freshwater mtn. streams in N.H. can't be beat. The west is dry, not all of it of course, but if you enjoy swimming away the hot summer your in the right place. Not hating on Utah or the West, just pointing out some differences. I'm heading West again come Autumn.. oh, and definitely not to Colorado:D

Hit the nail on the head. Sounds like you won't be leaving the east coast for 2 more years. If you want to have a some what flexible job during the season you might want to head out west before the end of the summer.
