Quiver addition: Adding a 90ish-100+. Seths, im88, Prophets, P4?

Other than what a read here I am a total jong when it comes to these skis. I am an east coast guys and spend most days on race skis.

I picked up some LP's earlier this year and while I loved their stoutness, I just don't ski the right terrian to make them the right ski for me. I wouldn't mind something a little on the fatter side, or what most mags would call a skinny ski. But reality being what it is, I don't get the chance to ski many big lines. I have been looking at skis with relatively smaller radiuses b/c that will be most useful for me. I have been looking at the following.

Head im88: Skinniest of the bunch but in reality probably fine for me since I want versitility. I like the tigher turning radius. I like that they are known as a somewhat burly ski with more of a race room type construction, but a little less waist and tighter radius then say an LP. These are my safe choice.

Seths: Seem like a popular ski for the dimensions I am looking for. Not hard to find used, construction seems to get solid reviews. Negatives would be that some mags say they are a little soft upfront?

Line Prophets: I like the tight radius on these, either the 90 or the 100 would be in my wheelhouse. I tend to stick to the Fischer/Head/Volkl type brands but the dimensions and radius of these caught my eye. Price did too.

Scott P4: Not quite in the same category. But a lot of good reviews around here. I am intriqued by the dual radius concept. Fatter waist than the rest, but the reality is whatever I buy will be a quiver ski and will only come out on the right days. I also have a lame softspot for scott gear in skiing and biking.

Maybe Salomon Guns too, generally just not a Solly fan though.

Back east I might billygoat around, ski some soft bumps. I hit up Castlerock a decent amount . . . I can't do that kind of skiing on a serious pow ski. Plus, when I get out west I have a hook up on a place to stay in South Fork so I end up a Wolf Creek. Lots of trees and short chutes to billygoat around on. Not much "big mountain" skiing.

So beyond calling me a tool for buying a skinny ski for the biggest in my quiver, can anyone help me narrow my list. Price and whatever I see floating around used might make my decision for me.

I'd say 88s are the best all around ski for eastern conditions from the ones you listed. Don't know much about the P4s but heard the same good things you did (just from mag reviews mostly). The prophets are dope... most people recommend the 100s.
Overall I'd have to say the Seths are sweet, I'm considering buying a pair right now actually. Very solid ski (like you said) and if you mount em forward a bit you can rip almost anything.
From what you posted I'd say take a look at the Volkl Mantra. It is a very all around ski and I've heard from a lot of people that if you are looking for a true "1 ski quiver" this is the ski to buy. It is also known for being good in the bumps and has a ton of sidecut compared to a lot of the other 90+ skis.

That is the thing. I quess I am looking at skis most people would consider a one quiver ski but they will be my powder ski. Not a popular move among mags, but right now I basically ski Fischer SL World cups as my one quiver ski. I have got some supersport 6's which are also a good one quiver eastern ski but they feel dead.

despite the fact that they were too short for me and were mounted on the line\too forward, the 176 mojo90s did just fine in pow. (similar to im88s)

im88, karma, dynastar 8800, etc would all be good options, as well as the mantra.

really ask yourself if you want a smooth damp ski (head\dyna) or a more lively feeling ski (volkls)
besides that, just pick the one you can get the deal on I guess. Theyre all good skis.

Monster 88 kicks ass. It's a thoroughbred on the groomers, can carve the crud, and floats nicely in lighter pow. But not everyone likes its feel, which is pretty damp --although it has a good amount of rebound energy if you're the kind of skier who likes to load the tail for boost.

As to its float, I weigh 155 and ski it in a 175cm size and found it gives me about 90-95% of the float that a 183 Gotama gives me. I'm selling the Gotamas and keeping the Monster 88 as my "big" ski even though that makes me a wuss among the Mags. My other ski is a 170cm Head SuperShape. My AT skis are 172cm Volkl T-Rock.

I say Seths. The newer ones are stiffer than the originals. Although, for what you are describing and being an east coaster, I'd go for the 179 for agility in tight spots. I'm about 200lbs and I think the 179 is a super fun, super solid, versatile ski. Wish I had a pair.

After having sold my Prophet 100's last year to find a better "big pow" ski, just last week I bought another pair. Haha. I couldn't get as good a price on them as I did the first time either. My definition of a fat ski has increased in width since then, but they are an all around performer in fun snow.

if you aren't looking for a big mtn ski then I wouldn't suggest getting anything too fat (again definition of "too fat" varies with your skiing ability as well as height and weight). for low angle powder you don't need huge sticks. if you beat up your skis a lot I'd say get the seths for the durability, if not then 88s or the Mantras for overall pow and all mtn ski.
i agree with pechelman though about them all being good skis. you'll grow into whatever you buy just see what you can get a good deal on.

I like my m777s as an all mountain ski (87mm in the waist with lower sidecut)- I think ptex1 is selling them for around $325.

Love my p4s, and am selling my ar5s because the p4s are just as much fun in the park, and i can still rail groomers on them. Prob not as much fun on the EC than utah for an everyday ski, but w/e. Its a quiver stick.

Sounds like the Head 88 might be the ski. They are probably the most expensive on the used marker and the graphics blow, but everything else about these skis sounds so positive.:yourock:

"Mantra"

Was the first thing I thought after reading your post. I'm a tele guy, so I can't give you first hand input, but every alpiner I've talked to whos got 'em has nothing but good to say about them. Plus they've got a little more girth than the m88. Your after a EC pow ski right?

I do own a pair of 191 P4s & they are a blast (again tele) They've pretty soft through the tip & tail which makes them a powder allstar, but with two layer of titanal there is enough meat in them that they get 'er done on the groomers too. My 191s are 108mm underfoot which may be a little gonzo overkill for the EC, but they are a good ski.

Smails - I think you need to post a bit more about exactly what you want this ski to do for you.

I would recommend the 179 k2 public enemy, mounted +1cm, to do what you've said so far, here in the east. Cheap, durable, skis well all around, very good in pow, bumps and trees. Somewhat like a smaller LP, but better at floating in the pow.

Sounds like something I would like for everyday. And if I had to go with a bigger brand (not PMGear/DP/iggy, etc.), I'd definitely look into the Mantra. They have a considerably stiff flex (judging from flexing squatch's 191s [or are they 194? I can't remember), but Squatch seems to like them in the bumps. Slightly longer turn radius than say a PE but from what I hear, they are still enjoyable in bumps and trees.

And many kudos to you for getting what you truly think is appropriate. THE SIZE OF YOUR SKIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE SIZE OF YOUR PENIS. AND EVEN IF IT DID... IT'S YOUR FUCKING PENIS, NOT THE DUDE'S NEXT TO YOU.

It sounds like the Mantra really is a ski I need to look into. At least compared to the Head, the Mantra always seemed light and flimsy when I flexed it in the shop so I never gave it much thought. I will now though. Some assbag listed some on ebay as "Montras" a few weeks ago. Should have watched them more closely because they sold for like $225

Footloose Sports in Mammoth might still have some left for $399. Look them up.

Smails, check out GapicSki's member named "dawgcatching," he usually has really good prices on a lot of skis (especially Elan and Head skis) in all upper-end categories -- race, skier-x carver, burly midfat, and skinnier non-yuppie (i.e. not Praxis, Kingswood, dp, etc) fat skis.

For example, check this thread. And it helps to call him, he sometimes will sell for less than what is listed in a thread.

Also check that ptex1 is selling Monster 88s in 175 cms size for $425 with free shipping -- look here

God dammit, I decided I would try to snipe some Line Prophets 90's on eBay and my computer frooze before I confirmed my bid. The went for under 300 hundred too.

I'm a pretty big proponent of the Fischer Watea. 134-101-124 192cm

The other skis you mentioned are probably all better options, but I think it's a contender.

They remind me a lot of Gotamas, but it's got more pop and inspires a person to play a bit more.

pros or the watea

• small radius for its size (25m)
• very easy and rewarding to ski. I'm always skiing with a smile on my face.
• It will carve like it is on rails as well and float, smash bumps, catch air, etc. Soft bumps are very doable (and a lot of fun), but if they're close together you may have to launch some.
• very maneuverable in the trees and tight spaces.

Cons

• Big and not feather light
• These are not LPs. If you are going ridiculously fast in really shitty snow you will not feel invincible.
• It carves like a GS ski, but does not go from edge to edge like a GS ski.

It's a thought anyway. like I said, the rest are probably more appropriate. I've got no idea what skiing in the east is like. Heck I've got no idea how to charge like some people here to. Come to think of it I've got no idea what skiing anywhere other than B.C is like. Maybe I'm way off ;)
