So I'm a newbie to the forums here and discovering a lot of new info pretty quickly. One thing I noticed is some people are wearing full face helmets in their pictures and I was wondering if they are a ski specific helmet or something else? I've got one I use for downhill mtn biking but I wasn't sure if it would work for skiing. Should I hold off on the full face until I'm skiing stuff that warrants it on a regular basis?
The ski specific ones are generally certified under CE EN 1077 (weaker) and/or ASTM F 2040 (stronger) which is the same snowriding helmet certification for your nonfullface...
Downhill bike helmet probably will be a better guarantee of impact protection with ASTM F 1952... seems like it matches what we do more
My fullface is certified for skateboarding and road/mt bike (ASTM F 1492 and ASTM F 1446... almost identical to 2040)
Do you fear your face when you are skiing as much as you do biking?
Use the same fuckin' lid and enjoy it....

My philosophy:
No full-faces on powder/graybird/moist days due to fog issues, which basically means no stupid shit on powder/graybird/moist days (which usually works out fine because I'd rather be skiing powder than taking time to look for hucks).
If it's sunny, no fog issues. If it's not, fog is typically inevitable.
Use what you've got when you want to use it. But don't let it give you false confidence (talking from experience). And GIT ONE THAT FITS. I still managed to eff up my jaw pretty badly in a beater the other day wearing my fullface, and I attribute that to a bad fit. Make sure the jaw region actually covers your jaw.
Use your mtn bike helmet if you want to wear it.
Giro's full face ski helmet is their mtn bike helmet with the vents sealed.
I knocked out nine teeth (knee to face). Worn a full face ever since and it has since saved me lots and lots. Basically comes down to what your're doing, personally I wear it because it makes me look cool.......and I like to chew my food:D :D

I am not a fan of full faces. They give a bit of peace of mind when cruising through trees, or areas with lots of exposed rocks, but I think the benifits are negligible. The chance of faceplanting into said rocks is pretty small, most people instinctively protect thier faces in a crash. The biggest reason I don't like them is because the faceguard torques your head around in a cartwheel, and it also tries to pull your whole helmet off.
Plus, they're a pain in the ass. I wish someone made a non full face that was as burly as the giro mad max though, I'd be happy.
EDIT: A huge reason most people like em is because they keep you from kneeing yourself in the face when ladning hucks. I say stonger legs + steeper landings + better snow = not a problem anymore. I don't really do any large airs, but I've only kneed myself in the face once, and it was a damn stupid thing to jump off of.
I wear the Ace Full Face (Its the MTB version of the silver and blue Pro-tec that alot of people on here have, but it dosen't seem any different at all, just has less padding in it which is actually better IMO cause it lets air in and my goggles almost NEVER fog...I can even wear it hiking with no fog issues.)
I know alot of people think its overkill to wear it unless you are hucking huge and stuff, but I always wear mine and I am very glad I do...
a few weeks or a month ago I was skiing some pretty steep NW facing trees with two other maggots....the snow was unconsolidated and faceted in spots, but the sluff was manageable. I found a really nice pocket and drop in hard. Long story short it fractured down to the rocks and I was going for a ride...face first....under the snow.....slid about 50 or 60 feet.....I stopped because I literally went face first into a tree (didnt see the tree cause it was all dark and stuff under the snow)....
full face saved me from serious face carnage...
I dont see what is so "over kill" about not wanting your face all beatered in....

one time inbounds at loveland i planted a ski under a rock, ejected face first down hill and plowed head first into a rock. my fullface saved my face some serious pain.

Giro makes a nice fullface, Remedy S. But good luck getting one. The Canadian distributor is all out of mediums, and has select few other options. They're virtually impossible to get out here. I just got mine, and I've been searching all season. Mine ended up being 190$ CND with tax, when it should've been 320$ before taxes because my friend works at the shop I "stole" it from. Other than relearning how to breath, they're great. I think 2-Czech just ordered one, and RugbyDave has been skiing in one for a while now, and without it I'm pretty sure his brains would be all over some rocks in CBC.

yea ive got a giro mad max II carbon fiber bike helmet that i use for DH.
