Just been evacuated

I have just been evacuated from my building because it is on fire.

I was sitting at my computer checking the weather and lift status and could hear someone banging loudly on a door down the corridor. Then they were banging on the door next door, and then they started banging on mine. I was wondering what weirdo it was and was walking towards the door when a fireman walked in saying that I had to get out of the building. He was followed by wisps of acrid smoke.

You know all those fire drills you have done where you walk out of the office casually grabbing your coat, wallet, mobile phone etc. well it didn’t happen like that at all. I actually panicked and tried to head out in a pair of fleece trousers and a t-shirt. The fireman stopped me and pointed out that it was cold outside and I should put warm clothes on.

So I have headed round to a mates place to wait for news. There are clear skies up on the Aiguille du Midi and it has been snowing for the past 24 hours (though lightly) and I don’t have access to any of my skiing gear :(

When I was a chalet gimp in Verbier in '99 my chalet burnt down. Pretty much the funniest thing ever at the time. But then the clients tried to sue. Not so funny. I didn't lose any gear of my own but a pair of xxx that I had borrowed to test from a shop got pretty badly mangled. The look on the shop owner's face when I took them back to him was priceless.

Seriously though, hope it's all ok and that you don't lose any of your possessions - that would suck. And that you have a home to go back to.

Ouch, that sucks. So did you salvage any gear? How bad was the fire?

there used to be fires in the lower level parking of my cham apartment frequently. it SUCKED to get awakened by the firemen, tell them to piss off, and have them come back 20 min later with the halls filled with smoke. blowing black snot rockets for days, burned-plastic-soot all over the place, but worht it to see one of my best friends from college, a bit of a talker when it came to climbing, get coached down the firetruck ladder.

Shit; I'm complaining about east coast conditions and people's places are burning down. What a dick. I hope everything works out as well as possible. You got insurance on your property (ie, your gear)?

Good news. The 105's survived, as did everything else. It all smells pretty badly of plasticy smoke but other than that no harm done. Well done to the Chamonix fire brigade. Looks like either a car or a set of bins burnt up in the communal garage underneath the building. the area is sectioned off so cant see exactly what happened. my car is OK too, but very black.
