Hip bruise
I hip checked some rocks a week+ ago and there is now a pocket of fluid formed around it. Should I go to the ER to have it drained? What will happen (beyond excruciating pain) if I hip check, say, a 30 footer to hardpack on it again? Currently, it hurts (bad) to roll over onto it in bed and I have a comp in a few days at which I will need to abuse it once again.
Important to note that the injury was not to the hip pointer/joint - (I can sit here and punch myself there all day long), but rather the meat of my ass.

A trip to the ER would be a useless waste of time and money. If you have insurance go to your primary car doc and ask them to drain it. If they won't do it ask them to set you up with a sports med doc who will. Also you might get some resistance to having it drained from certain docs. They will cite increased risk of infection as a reason. If that is the case, again ask to be referred to a sports med doc (doesn't necessarily have to be a surgeon).
Once you have a contusion like that and it bleeds between the muscle and the skin it will sit there for a very long time before it resolves by itself. Also it may need to be drained more than once. I have worked with a couple injuries like this and I can remember one of them that was drained 3 times before it totally resolved.
Make sure you wear some body armor over your hips/butt for the next comp.

Okay, bump for reinjury. It's all hard and kind of numb now. This pharmacist said that i may be in danger of throwing a clot and should have it looked at ASAP and be put on blood thinners. If I am not in any real danger, taking it easy and resting it is not an option at this juncture. What say the?

I too have a comp coming up with the same problem.....

This happened to my brother at the end of last year. He went to get it checked out and was told that if it's an open wound they would drain it, if not they won't so they don't risk infection. They told him if it doesn't drain on its own they would have to cut it out cause it will get hard (Dside sounds like you might already be there). He used a heating pad for a long time during the night and heat/ice cycles during the day. The heating pad worked for him to drain it, but it took about 3 months for it to go away completely. The hard part was trying to sleep at night because of the pain if you happen to roll over on that side. Dside, I would go get that looked at.

Sounds like what you guys did is worse than me but it still hurts like hell. Mine is more on the side JUST below your hip joint where your femur comes into the ball. The bruise grew overnight to the size of a very large, deep purple grapefruit. Being I have Aspen this week I want to do ANYTHING I can to make it feel better.
