here is the description of the trail (its the double black on the right)
"Avalanche- Expert - Steepest in the East! At 66 degrees, you can't find a more exciting run. Don't even think about it if you don't fit into the criteria warning sign at the top. "
can this be for real? 66 degrees is insane, and it sure as hell doesn't look that steep from the picture.

i think they are telling the truth about it. I read about the run years ago and always wanted to ski.
Then, one year, it happened. Cruised through the woods which became pretty steep. Living on the east coast for most my life, who would of thought about avalanches..PA especially. But with a foot of fresh on top of Pocono POwder, aka blue ice, it broke and ran with me. I skied as hard as I could to avoid the trees and rocks, before banking a hard left and out of the way.
Somewhere in there i skied the 66 degree slope. Actually, I probably jumped it.
Ty- parts of Elevator some years were that steep. I remember breaking out the protractor with a string on it and read 70 degrees. We used to always jump it but once I remember we tried to ski it and mark and I slid sideways down the face.
I'm calling bs. I don't think trees can grow on something that steep.

Slides in PA are uncommon, but not unheard of. Seven springs has slid twice that I know of. The first one I heard about Stowe (a run at seven springs, not the area on Mansfield) slid to the ground. This was in the spring when melt water rotted out the snowpack from underneath. The second one was last season after the forty inch dump. Little North face ripped loose. I dont think anyone was caught in either slide, but if someone had been I doubt there would have been anyone with avy gear to help them out.Quote:

I'm no rocket surgeon, but it's a bit faster to divide the "grade" by 2 to get the "degrees." Not exact, but damn close.Quote:

Ski Roundtop has seen Gunbarrel slide twice. I recently read an article on it claiming it's 50 degrees. I believe it - but it's that steep for all of 20 feet or so before flattening out.
Yeah, I gotta agree with basom. The size of the hills in PA simply don't support the idea of a sustained 66 degree run. They just aren't tall enough for a vert that steep to be anything more than a VERY short distance (most likely the back side of a mogul on a steep run).

I have seen avie debris on the bottom of black hole at Sunday River. It is really steep for say 50ft. I guess that's what happends when the set up a snow gun on it then it gets warm.
I have also read an article in skiing about an avie somewhere on the snowfields @ the Loaf. Same situation as above though.
i set off a slide @ kmart last year. it was in big dipper, or some steeper trees, skiers left, at the bottom for those who are familiar. 6-7" new, on top of hard snow. super windy the night before. soft slab fractured about 8-12" deep about 50' wide and ran for 150+'. was the coolest thing that has happened to me @ kmart. true story.
