Our own private ski area for the day (New camera tr)

Today we decided to skin up Alpenglow as it had the least avalanche danger in the area (huge layer of facets then a wind crust below 2-4 feet of windslab = treading lightly) anyhow we were getting ready in the parking lot and I saw a patroller walk into the lodge which is typically deserted on weekdays. Since I was on the patroll a few years back I knew what was up and suggested we visit them. The patrol director comes out and say hey we are gonna run the lift a bit wanna join us. So we got 4 runs without crossing other tracks for free and then we sat around bullshitting for a bit as the wind had started ripping hurricane force depositting snow perfectly. Alpenglow opens saturday and its snowing again. I love my new camera the motor drive is so zippy! Pictures:

That's about what I was thinking. I'm a photo idiot, but I'm sure they'd be a lot nicer if you could reduce the blobiness of the people in the picture (ie. they look like a big black spot on the picture). There's no contrast, although I'm not sure if that's really the right term and kind of make me squint to try to figure out what's going on.

Doesn't look too bad. Not much definition, but the lighting may not have permitted.

the megapixels dont really do much when they change from 8-10 on a computer screen, where it really matters is blowing them up and printing them out. there the difference will be very noticeable

That's probably what I meant. I suppose Alaska doesn't have much light this time of year...

Good job with the new camera, AK. The first few shots are not that great, but the later ones (with Doug and the scenery) are really nice. I'm sure it will take a while to master it. My brother-in-law got a Nikon D80 for Christmas and I was drooling over it during Christmas. Have fun!

I highly recommend the Magic Lantern guidebooks btw - get the one for the Rebel XTi. They explain the functions of the camera but are not afraid to give recommendations.

The terrible terrible kit lens. I just ordered a 50mm f1.6 for it though.

I'm not a big camera guy, but is there a white balance issue in some of those pics?

I think you need to learn to meter off the snow. I think that will help your w/b issues.

My mom just got that camera. I put it together for her. Pretty easy to use, but I agree that the lens is shit.

I can't believe how flimsy that thing felt compared to my D200. The weight is nice though, so I see the advantage. I am just so used to the D200 with the extra grip, the smaller lighter camera felt like a toy.

Enjoy it, and keep shooting. Maybe, just maybe, you would want to show us only the BEST ones, and not all of them?

Listen to the above advice. First, shoot RAW. Don't think about it, just do it. And get in the habit of sharing only your best shots. Anything out of focus, just trash it, because that is all it is. That 50mm is a good start. You might also consider, if you have the cash, a good Sigma 2.8 lens. I'm sure others will get on and rail on non-Cannon glass, but I've gotten a lot of good shots out of my 24-70 2.8, and it is a third of the price of equivelent Cannon glass. I also highly recommend the 15mm 2.8 fisheye.

Just keep shooting man and be more selective with the pictures you share. Stoked for ya and the new gear.

all you old tgr farts are a bunch of bitches on here, I have seen you all post alot shittier pictures than the ones in here. Alot of the guys who posted shit in here are pretty huge beaters and dont have alot of room to talk...
