Field guide to 997s & PSA: current wide brakes not compatible

So here's a sample line up of your garden variety 997s

1) 997 Carbon. non-Equipe. DIN 4-12. Plastic heel. Heel has tab adjustment.
2) DR9 Equipe w/ Driver Suspension plate. Din 6-14. Heel has worm screw adjustment,
3) Silver and red 997 Equipe w/ Driver Suspension plate (not shown). DIN 6-14. worm screw
4) fluoro yellow 997 Equipes similar to #2. Originally came with yellow plastic driver shims. These ones are mounted on aluminum plates from an s900.
5) Silver and yellow version of #3. Mounted flat. DIN 6-14

I know there are other versions like the racing versions w/ 11-17 DIN.

So here's the prob. I want to mount #3 on the Gots. I picked these 100mm Sal brakes from REI

...and the fucking fucks are not compatible. The wide brakes do not fit into the 997 Equipe brake placement area.

The wide brakes have a plastic "wall" along the rear which prevents it from fitting snugly onto the 997 Equipe heel. (They do, however, fit on the shitty non-Equipe 997 version with plastic heel/12DIN).

PSA: current wide brakes are not compatible with 997 Equipe heel.


Questions:
1) Are there "official" wide brakes that fit the 997E or do I have to do a bend job?

2) The wide brakes came with a leaflet full of legalese shit such as:
"Fat Ski Brake Application restrictions:
- Fat ski brakes are designed only for use for specific models of Salomon bindings. Using them on models of Salomon bindings for which they are not designed is not recommended and can be dangerous
- Fat ski brakes should be installed on Salomon bindings by a Salomon certified technician as specified in the Fat Ski installation instructions"

If I just modified it myself and cut the plastic part of the wide brakes to make it fit, will a shop still mount them?

3) Is there a way to pull the binders apart, take the metal brake arms from the fat version, and stick that into the original 997 brake housing?

I want my motherfucking 997s on my motherfucking Gotamas!

You might try just swapping the brake arms.

yeah just work the brake arms out of the housing and swap.

this is an easy fix. You'll be done in 5 minutes. :biggrin:

That's what I'm trying to figure out now. The brake housing doesn't look like it can be taken apart. No screws, only a couple of rivet-looking things. I'm concerned I might break shit and render them useless.


Edit: Oh I see. The brake arms are independent....I thought they were one solid U-shaped piece. Thanks!!!!

no need to douche: will post here. you probably already have this done but here goes just in case anybody needs it later.

I'm having computer problems and can't get pics up, but if you have any trouble swapping the brake arms...let me try to walk you through it..

OK, with the brake removed from the rest of the binding you can see that each brake arm touches the rest of the assembly twice, once on it's upper end and once in the middle where it pivots when you step down. If you grab the brake arm and pull it forward (would be toward the ski tip if it were mounted on the binding) you should be able to work it out of the little groove where it lives in between the metal bottom plate and the plastic top part, now the brake arm is only attached at the top and you can just sort of pull while twisting back and forth and the end will work it's way out.

I hope that made some sense. I'm thinking that if you just look closely at the assembly knowing that these do, for sure, come out and are, for sure, interchangeable...well, you'll get 'em.

My old yellers have 140 mm brakes on 'em and are mounted on fatypus' right now, I swapped the brakes in meself.

Thanks Yetiman! It took a couple of minutes to pull 'em out and put the fat brake arms in.


Onto my next pressing question on the search function.....Driver Suspensions and fat skis....yay or nay? I had plates on my first Iggs, and flat on my 2nd with no noticable difference

my only thought would be mounting...I think you'd end up having to freehand it because I really doubt there's a wide driver susp jig. All my (beloved) suspension plates are sitting idle because I only have a fat jig for the regular hole pattern.

with the <100mm skis I've added drive + plates to alleviate boot-out but that's mostly because I have a bigfoot.

I don't know if that's an "answer"

The photos aren't working at the moment as the server they are on is in redmond in seattle. They should be back up and running sometime over this weekend when power is back on to that data center.

just a PSA, for future users without the old brake housing or if you can't switch arms, you can trim the back of the housing on new style brakes to get the extra clearance to make them fit. basically make 2 holes in the back of the housing with a dremel or by snapping the plastic a little at a tim with a klein tool or dykes.

You may be able to get the suspension plate mounted if you know someone with a set of the Tyrolia extenders and the suspension jig. I seemed to be able to fit the Tyrolia extenders on to the Salomon jigs and it makes evrything into a wide jig. You may not want to get someone who doesn't understand the minute details of a even mount because they do take patience to set up correctly.

My "wide" salomon jig is just an old 957 jig with some mntlion-crafted extensions on it...so I guess if one could find the driver susp jig one could make it work. I tend to think that the suspension plate may not be worth the hassle. If I had a driver suspension jig to work with I would give it a try for sure.
