I want to put a bashguard on my bike, but keep my 3 rings (I do use the big one once in a while...)
So far the only one I've found is this from Heim:

Anyone tried that bashguard, or can suggest an alternative?
Question #2: is a 42T bashguard bigger in diameter than a 44T chainring without the chain on it?
You could also just use a dh bashguard with some long crank bolts and some spacers.
I wouldn't worry about which one. When mrps were the only game in town, they were allowed to suck. Most bashguards if not all around these days are pretty good. I know heim is a guy who's an obsessive tinkering type who usually goes through many iterations before putting something up for sale. He also rides dh. :)
I'm thinking the 42T version is the perfect diameter to protect the teeth on a 42T ring, so your 44T ring might be exposed. Perhaps find a cheap 42T ring to swap it out with if you can't find a 44T-size guard. Or just run the 46T pizza pan.
If you can't get anything to work with 3 rings, 28-38-bash has worked well for me in the past (no idea what/how you ride though).
any thick plastic guide does the trick and won't bend.
You've got to be going pretty fast to spin out even a 42.
I only run a 38 on my dh bike.
A lot of XC guys like to mach it on forest service/BLM roads. I used spin out my 44T doing that(yes, on the epic Y-bike.) Granted, it's totally uninteresting, but it's common. My next bike will only have 2 rings.Quote:

If I started from scratch, I'd probably try 24/36/bash or 24/38/bash...
But I just got a new bike with spiffy-lookin 22/32/44 rings, and I figured the easiest/cheapest thing to do would be keep all of em and add a bashring (since a 32 top gear is too small).

I've got a 22/36 on my freeride bike right now. It shifts just like a 22/32 combo. I have spun it out occasionally so I'm kind of curious about the 38 setup myself. No experience with it yet though. I'd imagine a 24 inner ring would allow you to raise the derrailleur enough so that you could get the same from a 38.
If I can find a 38 ramped ring in my stuff, I'll throw it on and see how it does. I haven't been on a bike in over a week so tinkering would be healthy for me. :)
pretty stoked on my 22-36 setup as well.
i actually run a SS 36T and a friction shifter. really never have an issue dropping the chain either.
I just use my big ring as a bash guard of sorts. My enduro came with a triple, and like you I didnt want to be swapping out parts right out of the gate, So I just let my big ring take the abuse and just keep an eye on the teeth and straighten as needed. The only times ive really needed the big ring has been for chain tension purposes. Sure its not the best solution, but its the cheapest, and if your bike is coming spec'd with a triple, I would guess you arent gonna be bashing it that bad to need a true bash guard
I have a Salsa bashguard that a shop (that I avoid completely now) ordered for me that was 100% not what I wanted. It was meant to allow you to keep all three rings. I think it's this one --> http://www.cambriabike.com/shopexd.asp?id=13004

I have a new e.13 bashguard sitting around, and I believe it is a 44 toother. PM me and I'll check tonite if you are interested.
I'm dieing to run that setup on my XC bike. 22t is such a low gear and 42t is too high for me at most any time. I run a 39t on my DH bike for chrissakes. Unfortunately a 4 bolt crank doesn't allow it.Quote:
