another fine day at Blackcomb 12/02

anyone living in the PNW or Southcoast as they say here in Canada, has to be really, really stoked. christmass has come early in the form of almost 15ft of snowfall. we have a 2 meter base and the season has barely started. Ive skied 7 days since the opening and every single one has been an epic pow day. today was the start of a high pressure, but we managed to still find some nice pockets of fresh snow.

Indeed we were, and had the entrance not been nice we would have done it anyway. Today was my first day skiing excitation with perfect visibility. I'm used to dropping off the edge of the world into a cloud of fog and hoping for the best.

hummm, Harmony was quite money yesterday. Windbuffed goodness everywhere, christmas trees are still fresh, gotta love it!

sounds like whis woulda been a better choice than blackcomb, Husume was very windblown but had some nice snow lower down and Corona was nice up top, real nice actually, maybe Blackcomb wasn't such a bad call. How was Excitation?

Skied Whis both Sat and Sunday. It was pretty good, espessially in Harmony, but Peak was pretty wind affected. I did a few very nice runs in the Symphany area, where the trees have given some nice shelter from the wind. Flute looked very nice but our group wasn't avi-equiped and wasnt up for the bootpack.

Excitiation looked pretty nice, but I'm new to the mountain and ended up missing the bootpack and didn't head back that way again.

1. Flute is in-bounds and gets avy controlled regularily.

2. Excitation was a little chewed up as usual but it's steep enough to make it a worthwhile run. The entrance is super mellow right now, later in the season expect a bit of a cornice drop to get into it, so if you don't like those, take advantage of the line right now.

There was a boundary rope on the way over there, are they still doing control work in inbounds but roped off areas? I'm totally new to W/B's early season boundary policy instead of closures. How about in Coulior Extreme/ 7th area?

if there's a boundary rope then its not controlled or patrolled.. but you're free to go at your own risk. although they lifted a lot of boundary this past weekend on whistler, chainsaw ridge (couloir extreme area) and 7th are probably still boundary. anything that says 'permantly closed' will most likely result in a pass pull if they catch you (i think a couple people from here lost theirs for a month last year). and finally if you're new to W/B you should pick up that little advanced guide to whistler book they sell everywhere.

There's a cat track all the way to the top of flute and bomb holes in the main flute bowl (thats as far as I've dropped in so far this season.) I wear my avy gear when I ski flute.

mmmm 5 hour death march. What was the climb to turns ratio on that one? An hour for each turn? Not so upset that I missed that tour.

yes, another pow day at Blackcomb. website only reported 8cms, but it was knee deep in the alpine. notice all the empty chairs on glacier. It was like a private club out there. Ruby got my vote for run of the day.
