So I am trying to figure out the best way to transfer files files from my old PC to my new Mac.
I figured I could hook both computers up to the same network (wired as opposed to wireless) and then use OurTunes or MyTunes (whatever the mac version is called) to just download the files from my old computer to my new computer...
then once this is done how do I sync my ipod up without fucking shit up?
is this the easiest way?
external hardrive should work. If you hook them up to the same network though, forget ourtunes; just share the folder/folders with all of your music directly - faster and you get to keep your organization if you have any

1) copied the files on the PC with windows explorer to DVDs
2) Pasted the contents of the DVD's in a new folder on my desktop.
3) Added the files to my Itunes library
4) Used the Itunes "consolidate Library" option in the Advanced settings.
If you have a decent network, you could just copy and paste the folder with the music from the PC to the Mac, and then follow steps 3 & 4.
And as far as the ipod goes, just deselect the autosync option.
There is probably a better way... but the only way I could get everything sync'd up was with an external memory drive. Save everything to it then you never have any sharing problems. It's also good because if your computer ever shits the bed you have everything saved in a separate place. I think they run between 80 - 150 depending on how much memory you want. It's just good to keep your tunes, movie, and porn off the hard drive of your pc and it solves the sharing issues that Apple has purposely created.

its pretty simple
make sure the folderis shared on the windows computer (right click the folder and go to sharing)
on the mac
On the left pane of finder, it should say network
locate the computer in there, probably under workgroup
select the destination on the windows computer
a new icon will pop up in the left pane of the finder... called "my documents"or whereever you music was
use this like a a normal drive on the mac, just drag and drop
I'm interested to hear about your ipod, mang. I tried to switch an ipod from pc to mac and it seems they are initialized for one or the other at the first sync. I keep using my friend's computer (mac), and it hasn't been an issue. My gf has a shuffle that is sync'd to a pc (her laptop) and I can't get the music from the mac onto it. I suppose it would be solved with a simple call to Apple...
Do you have the NEW Mac? I would think you could boot it in Windows mode and use a drive to transfer your music that way.

The easiest way in my mind would be to network the two computers. I have my ancient emac on a network with lots of windows machines and can log into either one from the other.
FAT32 does work, but you shouldn't have to do that.

Windows XP doesn't like to format 32GB+ drives as FAT32 anymore. There is no reason for this, it's just Microsoft screwing you over. You have to use another company's format utility.
do you know how to use the console and command line utilities? you should have gunzip installed and can run it from the command line.Quote:
