TR: Beehive Basin 11/10/06
Powder on the rocks...
Yesterday, me and a few friends headed out to Beehive not knowing what to expect in terms of snow conditions. We were greeted with about 4" of fresh on top of a crusty base left from last week's warm temperatures. Of course, this meant for a fair share rock encounters on the sun affected aspects, but it also meant little danger of getting buried. My only concern was that the fresh would not be bonded well to the base creating substantial sluff on the steeper slopes.

As I had expected, when I did a ski cut the fresh snow started to break lose from the base, however it only slid a few feet before stopping from the compression below, meaning slabs would not be too much of a concern. It did however motivate me to ski the line more aggressively in the event of having to out run the sluff.

It was a day full of stoke, definitely worth the long hike. Heck it was so nice up there I wouldn't have minded if we hadn't found anything ski-able. Not bad for this time of year for sure.
Hope you enjoyed!
BTW its puking in Bozeman right now...:D
