hardware removal and infections
I'm looking for advice on what infections caused by hardware feel like and whether I should have my screws removed. Last easter I broke my tib. plat. on a lodgepole. My dr said it was a 'clean break' and fixed it with three screws, slight meniscus tear but overall I was lucky nothing major to worry about.
My question to you guys, the area around one of the screw heads is causing some pain now that I started balance and strength work for the season, and that is where I hit my knee on everything( it just sticks out enough I guess). So is it my clam hurting or what? How does the infection feel, if you can feel it at all? It varies from no pain to gimping up stairs. Also what recover time am I looking at if I get the screws out until I can do everything again? I heard 1-3 weeks????
day one after hardware removal
So Dr. Sterett and team removed all three screws and scoped their work yesterday. It sounds like 4 days to a week on crutches (30% wb) just to let the everything settle in the joint. And after that strength work can start with pain being the only treshhold, but minimize impacts for a few weeks. But the holes should be filled in two weeks and I should be able to ski in 4 weeks or sooner, Not too bad. I feel great today and there isn't much pain, so I'm saving those vic's for later.
The best news was the joint looked great and the meniscus tear totally rebuilt or grew back. I had a small tear in the meniscus that they trimmed off and he said it had grown back and that everything was looking awesome in there.
They also said once it heals the chance of infection is gone and bone strength is what it would be if nothing had ever happened.
And to comment on Jim S's comments, I can totally see how this can be percieved as bull, I thought so all my life until I met a good friend of mine who is wholistic chiroprator and just using his free advise and cheap supplements I've become a believer experiencing it first hand, and even if it is in my head, I still feel better. But for $80-100 in calcium, magnesium,MSG, chondroitin, vit c it was worth it.
