Road Rally 2004--Trip Report

Road Rally 2004

Every year my friend Phil from Philadelphia and I take a ski trip. This year we went in Salt Lake City and Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

This is our Trip Report:

Sunday—our ship to Salt Lake leaves its port in South Lake Tahoe at 8 PM and sails all night with one port of call in Wells, Nevada. In Wells—local time 4AM—we have a lovely conversation the clerk manning the desk of the local Quickie Mart. We purchased coffee and honey roasted peanuts.

Monday—we arrive at Alta in time for opening bell. We enjoy powder conditions.

Tuesday—we enjoy sloppy seconds at Alta. We meet up with Phil’s brother Larry from Lakeland, Florida and local maggot The Rager. We smoke crack joints at the “Weather Station”. Unfortunately The Devils Castle doesn’t open.

Wednesday—we ski with Larry at Deer Valley and enjoy a wonderful buffet lunch. Highly recommended. After skiing we take Larry’s helicopter to Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Thursday—we enjoy powder conditions at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. We have two local guides, Olga and Helga twin sisters from Germany. In the ‘70s their mother was a swimmer on the East German Olympic team—and they have the bodies to prove it!

Friday—vacation is over so we hop a freight train over Teton Pass (it’s still dumping!) and hitchhike through Idaho and Nevada. Twelve hours later we arrive in State Line, Nevada, take in a show at Harrah’s, gorge ourselves on roast beef at the buffet, and have a wonderful conversation with a couple in from Duluth for the weekend.

Saturday and Sunday—we enjoy Kirkwood while skiing in the rain.

How were the conditions in Thunder Bowl yesterday?

TB was a very nice run. We skied a mellow tree run, but found pow the entire way down. We then booted up the ridge and did Palisades Extended. Some snowboarders through down a super gnarr line on the far side of the bowl. Next time you do the High T out to Palisades look for the ridge with the dead tree at the top. That was their line, it was the sickness.

Nice....I know those snowboarders who threw down those lines....I ran into them (Jake and Peter) at the bottom of six and mentioned that you guys had been back there and they said they saw you (they said they saw a couple of tele skiers + 1 snowboarder so I figured it had to be you guys).

Are you going to be up this weekend?....I really want to get back there (but I'm guessing this recent storm will destabilize things a bit back there for awhile).

I'm out for this weekend and will probably only be up on the holiday Monday next week.

I wouldn't write off TB for next weekend, just pay attention to the weather and winds. You could do a mellow scouting run before jumping into the gnarr. Did the boarders say how steep the line was? It looked like they were dealing with some sluff as the cliffs at the bottom looked like water falls with all the snow coming off them.

Either those are elegant descriptions of another means of transport OR you got it going on mang.

ehhh....I prolly won't ski with ya for at least 2 weeks then 'cause I'll be working that holiday Monday.

Anyways, no...they didn't talk steepness or anything, they just said that they had "a good run back there". I'll probably bump into Jake on Saturday (usually do) and will ask him for beta on the lines.

Just FYI -- I don't know much about snowboards, but those guys ride Steepwater boards out of Mammoth. Check 'em out if you get a chance, they look burly as fuck. www.steepwatersnowboards.com

Please kind sir if you will could you elaborate more on this? How the hell did you pull this off or are you just pulling my chain.

Cause I read this on the internet so it has to be true righ?
