Does anybody worry about...

...chemicals leaching from your Camelback bladder?

I was sent an article this weekend that covered the results of some recent research showing that, while some are worse than others, all plastics leach to some degree. This is exacerbated by heat and age, both considerations with a hydration bladder.

My first thought is, well shit, not much I can do. I mean, I'm sure as hell not going to carry a glass or stainless steel bladder, and I don't see myself going back to bottles.

Coincidentally, I ordered a couple Klean Kanteens to replace my existing (and quite nasty) water bottles. I originally ordered them because they don't hold flavors like plastic, so if I leave one under my car seat for 3 months, it should be salvagable. However, it looks like I've subconsciously begun to eliminate plastic drink containers....who knew?

I worry about mold and other growths more than anything. I try to clean mine quite a bit, but it still sits in the hot car all day long on days I ride after work (3+ days a week).

I too, worry more about the mold and shit that starts to grow in the tube. I have had to replace bladders because of this at times. The plastic leaking stuff I have never heard of but if all plastics do then that would be most drink containers. I think we are pretty safe.

I dont worry about it. I rarely use a bladder more than 2 years. Organisms are by far a larger concern.

I've heard this too. It's not something I choose to do anything about.

Eliminating plastic from daily life will be pretty hard. Good luck.

Please, before more posts like this, I'm not implying that I'm gonna try to eliminate plastic from my daily life. I was just posting about some interesting info I was sent.

I do own a car, but I rarely drink from it.

jibco: I've seen those and similar links. One thing is, the FDA allows certain levels of chemicals, and while they are aware of the effects of single chemicals, they have done little to no testing on chemical combinations or compounds, of which there are trillions of possibilities. Also, a larger concern isn't carcinogenic effects, but the effects on the reproductive system and offspring.

I'm hoping they'll shrink that nonsense and I can get sterile as well as stop hurting myself to impress the wood nymphs.

There is nothing there other than chemical leaching plastic boxes that they force you up the mountain in. Don't go there, it oozes everything but soul.
