I'm looking for a inexpensive, low profile, 1-2 person tent to take on quick overnight camping trips in warm weather. The REI model I was looking at resembles a boy scout tent. If the boy scout version isn't too heavy, I may pick one up instead of spending $100 plus at REI. Does anyone know how much they weigh and what material they are made out of?
i'd probably go for the REI tent... probably lighter and better made

A bivy is great for short trips. I strapped an emergency bivy to some trees the other night for partial coverage just in case it rained. They're light weight and cut the wind. The tent is more for my dog. She's a nervous camper and doesn't sleep a wink when we're out in the open. It's her protective instinct against all the critters I guess. She would sleep better in a tent. Yeah....she's high maintenance. Maybe I'll just get her a tent and make her pack it in.
A bivy plus an a tarp set up as an a frame is a bomber shelter. Super light, and probably more weatherproof than anything bearing the moniker of being "Boy Scout".
As far as I've seen boy scouts just like to carry a shitton of weight. Be prepared translates into "I like to suffer needlessly"
Being a former boy scout, I always carried a Sierra Designs Clip Flashlight CD (it's a 2 person tent that really is a 1 person) that weighed a bit under 5 pounds. It's not freestanding but it got the job done and is superweatherproof even after 200+ days in the outdoors. and no, never buy boy scout brand shit, it's all terrible.
