As many of you already know, today, August 9, marks the 11 year anniversary of Jerry Garcia's passing to the next life. I respectfully ask that all of you roll a J and blast some Dead in honor of the greatest musician that ever lived.

I remember arguments about whether Jerry's death or Kurt's mattered more, culturally speaking (obviously, if you were related to or friends with one or the other, it's a different issue). My take was always that Kurt's mattered, because it marked potential unrealized, while Jerry's just meant that someone who'd been spinning his wheels for twenty-some-odd years had finally stopped spinning. Basically, one snuffed himself quickly while on the upswing of his arc, and the other finally succeeded in snuffing himself slowly long after he peaked.
If it weren't for the deadheads, I'd be more of a fan.
In any case, despite the opportunity for the enema bombs of the world to explode their thing as above, props to a pioneer and a man of music.
Whatever. Well there is a lot of truth to what alpinedad says, there is a lot missing there, too.
Not only did Jerry create a catalogue of music unmatched by all but a very, very few Americans, but he exposed generations of people to all sorts of music they otherwise never would have found.
How many other people have had highly successful recording and performing careers in such a wide variety of music?
If you have ever read or watched any interviews with Jerry, it is clear that he was beyond intelligent - he was wise.
Too bad he could never win his wrestling match with the monkey.

Basically what I'm saying. Jerry was a great musician and brilliant songwriter, Hell, I'm actually listening to 9/16/90 (w/ Bruce) right now. I think he blew a very special breath into music history - as many have. But it is what it is. The rest of the world moved on 10+ years ago.Quote:

Always thought it was poor taste to crap on the deceased...what does Kurt Cobain, unrealized potential, and that argument have anything to do with the anniversary of one man's death? We'll recognize Kurt's passing when the time comes...
Bottom line, Jerry was a fun loving, extremely talented musician who sadly battled numerous addictions and the pressures of supporting an entire industry of 'deadheads'. His influence on music and culture will live on way longer than these silly arguments.
