The 06-07 CO TGR Summit Poll

Please only vote once, and let me know if something about the poll or the Considerations needs to be changed.
If you do not like the itinerary for your preferred week, please vote for your preferred week, comment on your issues with the proposed itinerary, and propose your alternative.

Voting Considerations:

Location
Front Range-Summit County = Loveland, A-Basin, Keystone, Breck, Copper
Vail Valley = Vail, Beaver Creek, Arrowhead
Aspen = Snowmass, Buttermilk, Highlands, Ajax
SW CO = Silverton, Telluride, Durango, Crested Butte

Financial
Peak season usually ends around the end of March. Peak prices are around $50-$70/day.
Small discounts are almost always available. Moderate discounts can be found occasionally.
Prices and crowds drop significantly after the end of the peak season.
Spring breaks usually run through March.
Vail Resorts' CO Pass holders have unlimited days in Vail in April
Loveland and Copper sell pre-season 4-packs for around $30/day
Aspen sells a pre-season Classic pass in person for around $40/day
Silverton goes to unguided skiing in April for around $50/day
Silverton is only open Thur-Sunday
The backcountry is always free.
The organizing committee will work hard to find discounts on lodging and tickets.

Weather/Snowpack
Late Feb will have the most wintery conditions in the poll
March will have the maximum coverage, and actually has the most precipitation.
April will be warmer, and days will be longer.
CO has an extremely dangerous snowpack. April is slightly less deadly than March or February.

Travel:
Denver International Airport is the largest area airport. It is the hub for United and Frontier, and is served by Southwest and Jet Blue, among others.
DIA to the FR-Summit areas is 1.25-1.75 hours assuming lighter traffic and good weather.
DIA to the Vail area is 2.00-2.50 hours.
DIA to the Aspen area is 4.00-4.50 hours.
DIA to the SW CO area is 6.00-8.00 hours.
The Eagle-Vail airport serves the Vail Valley from just west of Vail, about 15-30 minutes away.
The Aspen airport serves Aspen from just west of Buttermilk, about 10-15 minutes away.
The Montrose airport is about 1.5 hours north of Telluride OR Silverton, 1.5-2.0 hours to Crested Butte, and 2.5-3.0 hours to Aspen.
The Durango airport is about .5 hours south of Durango Mt., and about 1.5 hours south of Telluride OR Silverton.
The Grand Junction airport is about 2.5-3.0 hours to each of Telluride, Silverton, Crested Butte, and Aspen.
The Albuquerque airport is about 4.25 hours from Crested Butte OR Durango Mt, and 5.5 hours from Silverton.
Salt Lake to Aspen is roughly 5.0 hours. Salt Lake to Silverton OR Telluride is about 5.0 hours as well.
Four wheel drive is rarely needed in the FR-Summit-CO-Aspen area, but occasionally helpful in parts of SW CO.
Snow tires are pretty much a must for all but the Front Range, but chain use is very rare.

Events:
TBD, but generally speaking: hang out together after the day, but ski where you want during the day.
Resorts do put together shows and competitions during Spring Break and at the end of the season.

I voted for that first week in March, but I can't say I really have a huge opinion other than I'd probably like to booze with most of you. And ski, I guess.

cool! i'm actually looking for a excuse for a stateside trip next season.

does the --> mean "and" or "or"? if "and", it seems like a lot of ground to cover in a week. my preference would be a week split between crested butte and silverton. i don't really care when - whenever the best best for pow is. i suppose the safety factor should be considered as well. i'll let the local knowledge decide these points.

Just for reference, CU's spring break is the March 27-31, CSU's and Mines' is the 12-16, and CC's the 14th-25th.

well, I intended the --> as ANDs, meaning, first half of week (4 days) in the first area, then second half of week (4 days) in the second area.

But remember:
a) the exact locations are still up in the air, this poll is mostly about the dates. The local/organizing bunch will have to figure out the specific daily itinerary
b) you can always do what you want to do, irrespective of everyone else!

I am in Colorado on a ridiculous spring break March 6th-27th. So I am open for any of those dates in between (though I voted, only once, for the 10-18th).

There are 8 options here, and we're mostly voting on date. If someone likes the dates, but don't like the itinerary, I asked that they specify their issues with the itinerary proposed, and offer a general alternative.

Sorry, I meant that you could select multiple weeks. Like for Rontele's case, they're available for 3 weeks or so. People select every week they are available, then someone picks the week with the highest occurance, thereby accommodating the most people.

Although to a certain extent, if it's important enough (and a lot of people think it is) people will just change their schedules around whatever someone picks as the official Summit date.

Location matters little, to me. It would be nice to know by october, though, so I could pick up a 4-pack or a 6-pack or something (CB, steamboat, and Aspen/Snowmass all do cheap college packs. As long as I can make the actual date, I could probably get to anywhere in CO.

When I drive, the Durango, CO airport is a little over an hour from Silverton and Durango itself is about 15 minutes.

Time may vary.

Also, note that Taos is about 3.5 hours from Durango and is a kickass ski hill when they have snow.

Thanks Busta! Edited. How do the rest of my drive times look? I haven't done some of those in a long, long time, and I didn't bother to open a map and look, I just tried to pull some relative distances out of my memory banks.

Squatch, I got ya, and agree. Was that an option to allow multiple selections? I think it was. Oh well. Is it worth doing the poll over? I assume no, but it's a show stopper, I'll try again. Too bad these polls don't allow you to edit the options.

My drive times are:
Durango Airport<->Durango: 15 minutes
Durango Airport<->Durango Mountain Resort (Purgatory) : 45 minutes.
Durango Airport<->Silverton: 75 minutes.
Silverton<->Telluride: 100 minutes up to days, depending on Red Mountain Pass.
Albuquerque<->Durango: 5 hours, also very weather dependent.
Durango<->Taos: 4 hours, weather dependent.
Telluride<->Crested Butte: 3 hours.

Gunnison also has an airport, which would really only serve CB. I do not know the drive times to Telluride or Silverton.

As of right now I do not have a job nor other nags dragging me down (my gf will complain in due time) but I am so down with a Colorado trip around the front range's best inbounds and out of bounds lines - culminating in a maggot slay-fest at Silverton. Call Platinum Pete on his bullshit if he does not attend during his voted for time frame.

that's a sabbatical, not a spring break. :)

Yoss, I'm around the whole time. the rental stuff in Crested Butte will be cheap as hell if we get on it now. we did a bachelor party and rented the License plate house and another. 25 guys and two strippers (don't ask) and the places are still standing. CB snow could be spotty as hell by the late spring.

lemme know what kind of help you'll need. I get some pretty nasty rental vehicle deals and could line up some 15 passenger vans if people can coordinate. In my experience this is the the cheapest way to get stuff done. we'll buy chains in advance, especially if Southern Co. is where we're going to be.

I can make it whenever. Just need ample time to scheduel vacation, which shouldn't be a problem.

My buddy lives in Aspen, so I'm partial to the Aspen area. He is a ski bum at heart, so I'm sure he wouldn't mind if a few more mags crashed at his pad.

This summit is going to rock!

maybe we should make it where you can vote for two choices. like below zero said, i can probably make it whenever, wherever. just need time to plan for it.
