Help - Can't send email??

I dont get it I can get email but I can not send the PC is running Windows 2000 and it uses outlook with a pop account. I have checked with my ISP and they do not block port 25 (In SonicWall port 25 is open). I have turned off the sonicwall firewall still a no go. This user has just gotten a new HD and I up graded him to Windows 2000 from Windows 98. He is on a network and I gave him the same IP address and computer name that he had before. Also it does not require authentication and the outgoing server is the same as incoming. Should I reload the os? I also tried Thunderbird to make sure that it was not just MS products. Any suggestions?

Could it be something as simple as the outgoing server name isn't typed in correctly? (a comma instead of a period or something like that)

If you are trying to send mail, then an easy test would be to try to test the connection with telnet. Microsoft has a smtp troubleshooting article.

Basically you get a command prompt then at the C> type:
telnet mail.yourisp.net 25 (example only fill in the actual server name)
If you get a response from the server then type EHLO
Then type: mail from: youremailadd@yourisp.net
(The results should come back as 250)

This is very basic, eliminating the email software and settings.

Yeah no luck with the telnet. Driving me crazy.

What do you mean no luck with telnet? Do you get any response from the ISP's mail server? If not then start with their tech support personel and state you want to reach their servers with a telnet servername 25 command- they will tell you their smtp server name to fill in instead of the servername. Many times it has a format like mail.ispservername.com but some use outgoing.servername.net or some other name. They will provide the name of the server.

I did the Telnet with them and the request was not getting to them.

In Outlook, click Tools>Options>Mail Setup>Email Accounts>View or change existing email accounts.
Double click on the name of your POP account (and make sure that is correct)

Then check your Incoming (pop3)
Check Outgoing (SMPT)

(mine are the same for both here)

Make sure your username is correct and your password correct and test account settings.

May want to reboot before you try this. For some reason I do not understand, I had to last week.

Thats all fine I can set that account up fine on my lab PC.

If you are doing the telnet correctly and can't send a test message, then the question still is what is the response or error you receive? If you can't provide that, then it is hard without a very knowledgeable computer tech on site to say what the problem is (and they probably need a sniffer to see the traffic requests, rejections of the messages or packets, etc.

So unless you post back the telnet results or discuss further with the ISP techs, there, is not much that can be done. It could be a issue with the router, the ISP port issue, account issue, the actual computer (doubtful since telent session is really basic and even a virus infected machine should allow the telnet).

If no other info is porvided, then you will not get it working without some pro looking at it personally with all their tools.

Sooooo stupid, ok I disconnected the SonicWall again and this time for some reason SonicWall did not come back up right so that took down all interweb connectivity in this place which happens to be the town Police Department which lasted about 4.5 hours and was not at all fun. Everyone walking around all pissed off and packing. Then I was left alone in a room with a lot of marijuana which I think may have just been a test and well I passed. Then for what ever reason the Firewalls IP address deiced to take and the interweb was back. Then I was on the phone with SonicWall for like a hour and still could not get emails out. So I fdisked the HD and reinstalled the OS. As I was installing the OS I went to another PC and tried to enter in the account on that PC and noticed that the SMTP that was given to me from my ISP was wrong WTF. I guess they just have a normal cable connection coming in unlike the rest of the buildings that have T1s so I set his email up like a residential account and it works fine. I called my ISP and told them to put it in the notes and they apologized saying that they would normally check that but they saw that we have T1s and did not even think of it. So thanks for all the help problem solved.
