Chickenshit tickets and why people don't like cops

Today I got a 106.50 ticket for an illegal license plate cover. Yes, you read that right, an illegal license plate cover. He claimed it obscured his view of my plate and he couldn't clearly read it from more than two car lengths. After he left I got out and was able to easily read it from over 50 yards away. It seems to me that keeping the citizens of the town you work for happy should be a goal of any police force. This could have been done simply by writing a "fix it" ticket, or just standing there while I took it off. I was in no-way rude to the man and I in no way endangered anybody else on the road. I am obviously not rich and I was delivering pizza at the time. I have been told by other cops on the same force that it is pretty much standard to give delivery guys the benefit of the doubt. What is accomplished by writing me a ticket?

Anyone else ever get a ticket as ridiculous as this bullshit? What did you do?

What the fuck qualifies as an illegal license plate cover? And why do you have it? :confused:

For something like this, shouldn't you be able to remove the cover, have a garage sign as a witness that you have a legally inspected vehicle and then go to the town court to get the ticket voided? It worked for a plate lamp ticket for me once.

Aside from that, yeah, what a douche cop.

I once received a ticket for going 60 in a 55 on a rural interstate in Illinois. It was snowing lightly onto dry pavement. The cop told me that he wanted to give me a ticket for wreckless driving, but that he knew it wouldn't stick in court! Duh. Illinois, what a state.

Paid the ticket. Jerk ass.

I once received a ticket in Pinedale, Wyoming for going 47 in a 40. I was blasted by a radar gun no less that 20 feet from a 55 zone. He then blasted me about driving fast on rural wyoming roads (I rarely exceed 5 over any limit, anywhere), warned me about the elk that I would soon run into, and asked me for full documentation on my dog, warning me that I was likely in violation of several laws concerning the transportation of my dog. The german accented cop (a county mounty actually) stunk of stale cigs, and was a fucking asshole. That was the last revenue that town will ever see from me. I get pissed off every time I drive through there and that dude can kiss my ass. Fucker. They have since raised the limit to 55 in the area I received the ticket.

Almost every ticket I've ever received (only a few in my life) has been a chickenshit revenue builder for said community with nothing whatsoever to do with my driving (16 years accident free).

Anyway, I think plate covers are commonly seen by cops as laser busters, so they like to give tickets for them. I think the average officer is a good guy, but there are plenty of assholes out there, and the more time one spends behind the wheel, the higher the likelihood of running into one. Its part of the price of driving I guess. :fuckyou:

I asked him if why he couldn't write me a warning or a fix it and he just ignored me. The guy was the complete opposite of what a cop should be.

Go take a picture of your lisence plate cover first thing in the morning. Then find out what the law actually says. Many states require the entire lisence plate to be unobscured, even the name of the state at the top.

If you were actually in violation of the law, there is not much you can do except maybe plead your case to the judge and claim some kind of financial hardship. If you are polite and he is in a good mood, he might let you off.

If you believe you were in compliance with the law as it is written, then dress nice, speak softly, and talk to the judge. Show him the picture of your plate, tell him that you have already removed the cover(which you should do tomorrow right after you take the picture), and see what happens.

I delivered pizzas my senior year in HS. I could practically get away with murder right in front of the cops in my delivery ares, and they never did anything. Sounds like you got a raw deal. Good luck with the judge.

This is my third ticket ever, and the first one I truely didn't deserve. The first two were from state cops for doint 23 over both times. That was all my fault, and while I wasn't happy at the time, I have no one to blame but myself and the crappy speed limits in this state. The thing about the revenue "building" in this town is that the pd is incredibly well funded but they still run into budget problems because they are something like the third or fourth highest paid department in the country. They used to be number one. New cops start at 50 grand a year. I have no problem paying good cops their due, but too many of them need to look up the definition of "protect" and "serve," because chickenshit isn't it.

The cop took a picture, but he used a camera phone, and if I choose to fight it I'm sure he'll bring that picture. I don't know what the law says, but I do know that I had a cop tell me to CLEAN the cover because it obscured the plate. I did that and he told me it was fine. So why a month later is another cop from the same department telling me something else?

Also, I don't know if this has anything to do, but after I looked at the name, I realized this is the same cop that had me drive to the station to fill out a statement about a robbery that took place at the store about a month ago, when I had mono. I could barely stand up and he wanted me to drive across town to fill out a statement, after he aldread had a confession from the guilty party!

Sounds like it's a judgment call on the part of the officer. So it might vary from officer to officer. This officer could just be an up-tight "by the book" kind of guy, while the first one that told you it was OK was a little more laid back. The good news is that his isn't the final word.

Talk to the judge. Think about what you want to say before you get there, and be polite. Act like this is a routine matter and you understand why the officer gave you the ticket(even if you don't). But you were operating under the mistaken belief that your plate cover was in compliance with the law because of the information you recieved from the first officer. As soon as you found out that it wasn't, you removed it alltogether(because you have, right?). Then ask him if he will dismiss the ticket since you are now in compliance and had taken steps, prior to being sited, to bring your vehicle into compliance with the law.

You will have to put all this in your own words so it sounds natural, but convey this to the judge. I have had several petty tickets like this dismissed by just talking to the judge and not trying to make it seem like I didn't deserve the ticket. There are no guarantees, and you may still have to pay the fine. But your best chance is to just talk to the judge and tell him what happened and show him that you were/are doing your best to obey the law.

I work until 4:00 AM and its not uncommon for a cop to follow me for serveral miles through town on the way home. One time I was driving down the street and a cop was going the other way and then turned around and followed me for about 5 miles.

On the flip side, when I was finishing up college I got pulled over doing 93 in a 65. I apologized to the cop and explained that I had just gotten finished with my first big job interview and was trying to get home to see my girlfriend. What did he give me?

A license plate violation (one of the little lights was out). $75 in CT, but no points on my license, no reckless driving charge, and no $300 ticket:yourock:

I heard if you get a license plate cover, you'll pull all the hot bitches.

I had the same "license plate" thing happen to me a few years back. The cover of the license plate was actually from the car dealership that the previous owner had purchased the car from.
The state trooper pulled me over, told me what was wrong, gave me a warning and I went on my way. I got home and took it off.
I was polite. He was polite.

Some LEOs (law enforcement officers) are jerks. I have LEOs in my family, and they are good people. They will readily admit that there are bad apples on every force in every town across the U.S.A.

If you want to know the truth, that cop probably sees you driving around all the time, and has probably seen you roll through stop signs, not use signals, etc, and popped you for the plate cover. That's how that shit goes down.
