Cheap/knock off road frame suggestions needed

Since I rocked my Scattante up on my roof, I have all the parts but no frame or fork. I am not interested in spending big coin on a big name frame. My main priority is mtn biking. I would like to add a day or two of road riding in for convience and family time (less driving). I was happy with my Scattante which was Aluminum with carbon fork and carbon rear. I might replace it with the same frame from Performance. But looking for other highlights out there. I like the road dampening feel of Carbon, not too picky about geometry. Just looking for some suggestions. Frame only <$600. I know there are some devout roadies here, don't be offended.

There's a ton of really nice steel frames on ebay. They go for cheap as everybody wants carbon/alloy. You should be able to get a super nice steel frame for around $400.

There's some truth to the old saying of "steel is real".

Brand new full carbon frame, fork, and integrated headset. SAB is a legitimate Euro frame manufacturer that makes HQ stuff.

try also GVHbikes.com - Gary Hobbes in Coos Bay, OR has been slinging road bikes from his basement since I raced junior (10+ years ago) - great deals and top notch service. And he can fit you over the phone...steel is real, but only if it fits. And, uh, AKWL, steel is an alloy too...

I used to think those Leader frames were pretty cheesy but the hardtail MTB frames look nice, and have gotten good reviews. huh.

I have access to an Argon18 frame, fork & headset for $350 + s/h. It's a 2005 54cm Xenon (Lady), the fork is carbon with a steel steer tube.

What size do you need?

IG, thanks but from what I read they are built around a custom fit, not that I couldn't get that done, but a Women's specific bike? Now I know what you think of my riding :rolleyes:

scattante carbons are in your price range too....

or just bring in the busted frame to performance, and call them out on there 100% satisfaction gaurentee. they will give you another frame if you press hard enough. then spend $600 on your mountain bike or buy some skis...

An older steel frame on EBay or somewhere else should be fine, but check for rust inside the tubing. Don't want the bottom bracket splitting apart on a nice downhill.

I second marshall on the performance callout. they do stand by a 'no questions asked' 100% satisfaction garuntee and you are clearly not satisifed with the way the frame held up...

I have a few close friends who run the shop there and I am sure one of them could be bribed into making it an easy transaction. I know they don't give a shit about replacing or accepting returns. this is clearly the way to go here....

then you could use the 600 to buy a set of legs.... or lots of diapers, YEAH!

well I know Supergo is now performance, but I bought it online through Supergo. don't know if that will be a technicallity or not. I know someone who use to be a Performance bike wrench, i'll try and get in touch with him. I hate abusing the system, but its worth a shot.
