Shipping “tax number” from Germany to USA

Has anyone here ever had to supply a “tax number” when purchasing something from Germany? I am trying to buy some bindings from a shop over there and they are saying that they need to know my tax number for shipping??? I have never had to supply any type of number when purchasing items from Telemark Pyrenees, so I am wondering if this is a requirement of Germany. I have no skillz reading or speaking German, so their website is useless to me. I searched a little here and looked at TP’s website to see if there is any info out there about this, but the only thing mildly related I could find is, “you may be charged by the Customs Service in your country”.

Since you are not buying as a business company you shouldn't be oblidged to fill anything in there. Just ignore it and see what happens - if they don't take an order form without it place an order by email instead.

Usually it refers to the VAT# which you solely have to add upon INVOICE which is not the case here.

Yup, it's on the invoice.

I did learn that if your skis and/or bindings are for “cross country” use there is no duty tax. It’s pretty easy to persuade them that AT skis and bindings are “usually” in cross county mode.

Not really sure, but I used that number and got the bindings.
