Good luck, but I wouldn't at all be surprised if Bloom loses his NCAA eligibility because of this. The NCAA can be real hard asses on these kind of things.

I think the logic is extremely loose, but their argument is that it is OK to take $$$ from MLB ala Chris Weinke, Ricky Williams, Drew Henson($2mm!!!) during the summer and playing football in the fall. additionally, these players are paid signing bonuses not salaries. The NCAA's problem is that they find the spancership $$$ illegal, not having looked at the law according to the NCAA I'm sure the prize $$ is frowned upon too. whether Chris, Ricky, and Drew paid for their bats, glove, and shoes is up in the air.
Personally it is BS. I didn't hear of anyone at CU or the NCAA yelping when he won the Worlds wearing a Buff's helmet.
I hope Bloom succeeds, but it seems like a long-shot. The NCAA is a stickler for its rules, and I'm sure they would just threaten CU with probation or some other penalty if they allow Bloom on the team. I think the NCAA's concern is that if they allow a loophole for skiing endorsements, it could potentially be abused by school boosters in the future. (i.e. come play football at State U. and we'll give you "endorsements" in whatever other sport/activity you participate in.) However, I'm not sure why the NCAA can allow professional baseball players to play football, but not professional skiers. Anyway, the NCAA usually has its head up its ass, so I hope Bloom can make this work.

I think the issue here has to do with individual college athletes being able accept sponsorship monies. Currently, an athlete can earn a professional salary from a sport other than that which she/he competes in college. They cannot, however, accept money from bat & glove, shoe, ski manufacturers. Teams, however can receive endorsements for equipment.
One one my friends played for USC back in the 80s and was pissed because he couldn't wear his favorate Converse cleats and instead had to wear team issue (i.e., endorsement to the athletic dept.- or where ever).
Pretty sure Viva is spot on with this one and just so you know I am all for Jeremy being able to do both. Getting paid by an organization like MLB or the NFL is one thing. Endorsing a product while competeing and getting paid for it is another ball of wax. If this were allowed someone would sure enough find a way to abuse the system and the money would end up paying for the latest 6'7' superstar to play his chosen sport on top of going to school for free.
I for one believe in the ideology behind the NCAA, ameture status and such. If that doesn't exist then the spirit behind college sports doesn't exist and then college sports just becomes another minor league farming system for pro sports.
While it is indeed bs, think about this. King James could have played college b-ball while being paid the $80 mil (or whatever it is) from Nike. That's what they're trying to avoid. You can get paid for another sport, you just can't endorse products and get paid for that. That's how JB makes enough to travel and ski. Sponsors give him $$$ to say "I sure like my ___ skis and this ____ underwear keeps me warm."
Pretty facked though that a guy can't represent his country in the olympics and still play ball. NCAA sucks!
This reminds me of a funny story a guy I swam with in college just mentioned to me a couple weeks ago. When a recruit makes an official visit to the university a student-athlete hosts the recruit. So before the recruit arrives the athlete goes over to the athletic department and gets money to use for meals, etc. during the recruit's visit.
So, my friend gets his money and the recruit comes. It turns out the recruit had to leave a few hours earlier than he was scheduled to due to another commitment. A week later my friend gets a call from the athletic department saying "we heard the recruit left early so you have to give X dollars back from the per diem." He's like "well, I don't have the money, I already spent it." The athletic department replied "If you don't give it back you're ineligible." They were right, of course, this would constitute a violation for paying an athlete.
I'm sure the amount was something like $20. Just an example of how strict they are.

The reason individuals cannot accept money is because it would infringe on the larger, more lucrative sponsorship opprtunities for school athletic departments. The schools choose to play under NCAA, so the NCAA protects them. It's a circular protectionist way of controlling money, with no regard for the players or ethics of the sports.Quote:

Yeah, I thought of that one too. The problem I see it is that right guard doesn't wand the Jeremy Bloom Corp. to endorse its product. They want Jeremy Bloom to endorse their product. He still can't put his name on it. Now, if his spancers were willing to go w/ the JB Corp. certification then it might work.
