Probably at some point this summer, I'm thinking I may get a different video camera and have a question about video quality (yes, I searched)...
When I'm looking at resolution and see that a camera has 1000k effective pixels, does that mean the image is going to be similar in clarity to a 1 mega pixel photo?
Any other info regarding how clear one camera is going to be versus another would be appreciated
Just to simplify, there are three main resolution and display configurations on the market, and the video formats are NOT comparable to still digital. Just to get it out of the way, still digital is collecting a dense image for printing. Video is for display on either at standard 4 x 3 or widescreen 16 x 9 television screen or monitor. All mini DV cameras get standard video. For widescreen, some use an increased resolution, or crop the picture by cutting off (letterboxing) the top and bottom. The best consumer equipment costs over $3000 USD and consists of digital wide screen 1080i resolution. Most of us use something a bit more modest and portable. If you don't have megabucks to spend, there is no need to discuss anything better than a 3-CCD Mini DV camera with the capability for actual widescreen recording or standard (Example Panasonic PV-GS500). That camera has an integreated 4 megapixel still digital camera and costs about $600. High Definition widescreen is much more expensive, and is presently only availbable in Sony Products as far as I know. If you have the budget or interest higher end products post back.

But in short.
Get a native 16:9 miniDV if you get mini dv.
If you get a HD miniDV,the sony HD mini DV isnt that expensive,about 1200$ or something.
BUT. You need to have hell of a editing rig to edit/compress/burn. I mean top of the line.And you would need to have a HD capable output for it,a 780p or 1080i tele/projector, unless you down convert it to SD.In that case you would do more work with you computer,but you would get better picture quality that regular SD miniDV.
If you go the normal SD miniDV route, i prolly would check out the JVC or Sony hard disk drive (HDD) recording cameras.They record on internal HDDs instead of miniDV tape.
