Arranged Marriage

I share a cubicle with a guy from India who is leaving tonight to fly home and get married to a woman he met a couple months ago. I've always questioned this system, particularly when I was sort of seeing an Indian girl who couldn't take things any further because of her future husband she'd never met.

However, after talking to this guy, I think I like the sound of it. For starters, there is apparently quite a bit of money involved...certainly not a reason to marry a stranger, but not a bad perk if you have no choice. Also, I saw a pic, and she's pretty hot. Now, I guess this part of it would be sort of a crap shoot, you never really know what you're going to get, but it might be worth the gamble. Finally, I think the best part is that your decision is made for you. I may be jaded, but I basically think all girls are a pain in the ass (as men are to them, I'm sure), so why go through all the bs? Just get married, have kids and live life, that part of your life is decided, allowing you to put all that energy into other things.

Just a thought.

At least he's old enough to work in a cubicle. I understand many arranged marriages take place while the couple are still teenagers. THAT is fukt up.

Yeah, I guess the arranged marriage might work if you want to get married, have kids, etc. But what if you don't want one or more of these things? Heck, what if you're gay?

That's what I'm thinking. And say your family truly did understand what YOU want. Do they agree that it's in your best interest? I think about all the nagging I get from my mother that I should go to church and have kids whether I want them or not, yada yada... And remember her and my sister discussing that it doesn't matter if you have nothing in common at all, or aren't really attracted to one another for that matter, the only important thing in a relationship is your shared religious beliefs. (And even if that doesn't have you gagging don't get confused here, what she really meant was that my husband should share HER religious beliefs, not mine...)

Basically if my family was setting me up in any relationship, let alone a marriage I think I would have run away screaming....

My parents keep trying to foist this woman on me but all we have in common is our mutual disinterest (and she doesn't ski either).

I just don't like the way marriage is shoved down our throats through the media or our own family, since the day we were born. Because when you're a female approaching 30, you feel pressured or invalid if you're not on the way to the altar. Luckily for me, my parents aren't worried or pressuring me at all. But it's in the air. Friends who say, "Oh, don't worry, it will happen when you least expect it! You'll find him, he's out there!" And then I walk away, thinking, "Hey! Yes, I will find him! I have nothing to worry about!" But what if I *don't* find him? What if I am single for the majority of my life? And.....what's the big deal if I am??? Sure, I don't want to be alone for the rest of my life. I just wish the idea of *not* being married was regarded as being just as healthy as those who are married.

That's all!

...Is it Friday yet? I can't wait to ski.

Word. Relationships suck unless they literally suck, then it's tollerable at best.

hmmm.... i would have to strongly disagree with both arranged marriage, and most importantly (since im not getting married anytime soon) the assertion that...

I think this is a good idea. My wife and I keep everything separate. Well, ok, the mortgage is in both our names. I guess that is the biggie, though.

1.5 billion? That's just sad.
