High speed question.

Ok here's the scoop.

My little sister needs to get high speed some how...cable would be ideal but the catch is the cable she gets....she doesn't pay for nor does her neighbor on either side of her, so she doesn't want to get it ganked back and certainly doesn't want to peel out 70 a month for it. So that would sort of be out, i suppose. I thought you could just hook up a cable modem and wha la but isn't there something you'd need to input on the cable companies home page to allow the signal to go to the modem?? What other options are the best and cheapest. Sorry but I haven't followed any of this shit. I have always used cable and just bent over.

Check to see if she has any neighbors with an unrestricted WiFi modem? I have also seen neighbors getting together and splitting the bill for a 3M cable modem. One person gets legal cable modem, all parties split costs for the Wireless router and monthly internet service costs 4 people makes it pretty cheap with a minimal investment.

The neighbors are questionable at best. So that's probably a no go. Also there is no wireless floating about that i can pick up. Hence the biggest challenge.

That could be a viable option, if she is in good standing with the phone company DSL has gone down by 70% the could be a good sale going on with the phone company/ But in the long run they will jack the price up.

They are just cheap now to get market share from the cable companies.

There is also the satellite route/ High-speed downlink but slow uplink (Phone line) They offer incentives to install but I believe more expensive and inferior in the long run.

Negative, she is strictly cell phone, Less expensive, the phone company in here area is shady to say the least and basic service is about 35 bucks, cell makes more sense.

She just doesn't want to get her landlord and neighbors on her shit about the cable, which i can understand. I told her i'd see what i could find out.

Universal Lifeline service. You pay for it on every phone bill so that people with low income can get home phone service for ~$5 a month. If she's a student (or other low income type) she probably qualifies. Every landline company has to offer it.

And they don't care if you add a $35 DSL package to your "low-income" $5 phone bill.

i got my dsl, but don't pay for local number. I'm strictly cell. 35 a month for the first 6 months, then up to 70 a month depending on how fast you want (qwest). Most phone companies are doing this i thought

so is your sis starting her own business with a dsl line and a webcam? :tongue:

actually qwest was the first to offer dsl without having a land line. I have no home phone but do have dsl. check with the local phone company and see if they offer this type of service.

She will have to call the cable company and they'll send a tech out to hook her up since they don't know she's already hooked up. The tech will notice she already had cable, but probably won't give a shit. Around here they get an order that reads "Connect apt 123 at 987 Some St". It might (but probably won't) also read "Apply Filter". So .. worse case scenerio is that they'll apply a filter to block out the TV signals, but probably only on her place. If the tech opens the box and it's full of non-cable-company spliters and shoddy work, they might call into the office for a reset request, maybe.

All hope isn't lost though if a filter gets put on since those can be removed with a little creativity.

My advise is to have that TV disconnected, with an obvious antenna or DVD player hooked up to it instead, so that suspicions are aroused.

She is also going to have highspeed, so getting the latests shows via bittorrents won't be any problem if she does end up with no TV... :D
