As of this morning, Mt. Washington set a record low of -41F with wind gusts of 100mph, wind chills at -95F and is reporting a "presence" that opens doors, turns on the tv and apparently de-ices the tower.
That's cold. And scary.

Thanks, you're right, that is both cold and scary. If you follow the "current conditions" link on that page you'lll see that the temp has dropped even more since he wrote that, current temp is minus 44.7F.
Just the other day somebody said the record low up there was minus 47F, guess they were wrong.

Yeah, I believe the -41F (or 44 or whatever) is a record low for this day.

Serious question: is Tuckerman's skied in the winter? If not, why? Avalanche danger? Too cold?
JMO, is there a way to look outside that building in those extreme conditions? Or are windows permanently iced up or fogged? What about looking out during the night? Otherwide you'd need to open a door or window. -dave

But I'm pretty sure there are windows up there that those guys can look out of. Never been to the observatory so, I can't say for sure.

Tuckermans in winter is more mountaineering than skiing. You best not go up there unprepared, you screw up and you're a popsicle..

Yup. Definatly a serious mountain. 160+ dead can't be wrong. When I climbed it in late Feb a few years ago, a few people were skiing it. Tucks gets a lot of windblown snow, and it faces east. I dont have much avalanche knowledge, so use that as you may.

That's right. People die up there and the bowl slides often. That's why most folks only go up there in the spring when the slides occur less frequently (and there's a bigger snowpack). Not to mention, getting caught in -41F temps and 100mph winds could really suck.
Basically, the weather blows up there - all year long. If you go, do your homework and be prepared for anything.
My buddy Pete worked at the observation tower on mt. Washington for a year, I forwarded him the link and he said he'd never personally encountered "the presence" but he'd heard of it. He did say that one night during a thunderstorm they stuck some flourescent light bulbs outside, connected to no power source, and they lit up! pretty cool!

That's nothing ;), when I was in middle school the governor of MN called of school for a couple days because of extreme cold. I think it topped (or bottomed) out around -50 F at my house, the record low was set though for MN at -62 F. Both of those numbers were temp with out the windchill factored in, I think it was about -80- -90 F with windchill.:DQuote:

I believe Mnt Washington is the second most deadly mountain in the world, behind everest, based on people who have died on the mountain. Just because it only tops out at 6288ft doesnt mean it isnt serious. Everytime I climb it or ski it I see people who shouldnt be there.
