Ouch!

Holy shit did I get my bell rung this weekend! Took a ride down a shallow section of clear creek below tunnel 1 upside down on Saturday. It wasn't a very challenging section, I hit a rock wrong and lost it on a rapid running out into a foot or so deep rock garden. I immediately started hitting rocks and took 2 blows to the face before bailing the hell out of my boat and swimming to shore. 1st hit was between my eye socket and my temple, 2nd was in the jaw way to close to my teeth. The hits were so hard that I had a flash of white light just after impact. Fortunately my partner was on the ball, quickly made sure I was okay, and was able to get all of my gear. Very scary reminder that any section of water can be dangerous.

Time to look at a full face helmet? Glad you're okay, I think every kayaker has had a ringer if they've paddled enough but it always sucks....

Man that shit is still really boney. I rang my bell at the ww park in the library hole the other day. I got the same sensation, white flash and cracked my teeth together hard. I also scratched my brand new helmet oh noooooo.:biggrin: :eek:

good to know you're okay, and make sure to kiss that deck! clear creek is a BAD place to be upside down, esp. at low flow. I got my bell rung several times this weekend in Dowd Chute, but luckily they were all direct shots to the helmet. shoot me a PM and come on up this way this weekend where the water is deeper. I think I'm taking a newby out somewhere, maybe the Upper Colorado or the Arkansas.

Thanks for the invite. We are actually heading to the Arkansas over by Salida for that colorado whitewater training camp. Keep me in the loop if you are taking out newbies in the future, I am definately interested.

I'll second that CC is a bad river to be upside down in. I've had a sore neck for days after some hits on black rock.

If your getting your bell run hard in non-pushy, low water class IIIish you might want to pad your helmet out more or get a better one. So many of these nice kevlar helmets have the weakest padding system and do little to disperse the impact. It's great that their glass/kevlar, but you'll be knocked unconscious before you really test the durability of that feature. I use an FNA full face which is decent. My old Grateful Heads came with lame padding and is a liability in a lot of situations.

On that note, has anyone been temporarily unconsicous after getting hit upside down? I worry about that happening sometimes.

Helmet did its job well, actually I bought a new helmet with a better fit that morning before hitting the water....very lucky. The shots that caused the white flash were from rocks hitting me directly in the face. I am going to look into a full face helmet.

I am also going to keep my eye out for some good rocks to smash MBSC with:FIREdevil
