making skis

ok
i am planning a project for school (end of senior year)

1) How possible do you think making skis would be (1 pair, from scratch)???
(scale 1-10, 1=impossible/very hard)

i have never made skis before/done anything like this before
i will spend alot of time on it, alot, 30 hours a week, for a month
they only have to get 3/4 done realistically
I m thinking of modeling them after prs
i'm a high school senior, but i will devote my life to making them


2) How much will they cost??
manufacturers bump the price up right??
if it is between 200-300 that might be realistic (can anyone hook me up/point out a good website)

...i saw a post about makgin skis a while back...hopefuly i can get some good responses

(note: I am not attending school while doing this...i have all day)

EDIT: discount the pr part when thinking about how hard it would be, thats just an ideal, hwo hard would it be to make the easiest skis to make?

PM him and see if he wants to talk. or you could email someone like 4FRNT or Armada or even somebody big (rossi/saloman/atomic/volkl/etc....) and tell em its a high school project, etc.... companies like the good PR that gives em, and 4frnt and aramada might do it cause they're tight companies and they're just getting started themselves.

do you have a mold and a press to use? Because otherwise it might be quite a challenge. If you don't have that shit, be prepared to make some old school wooden sticks.

I made skis when I was in 7th grade. Mine were super simple; just thin layers of wood pressed together and then bent with a laminent all around. i never mounted them but I'm pretty sure they would have wirked. I'm sure you want edges and ptex. I'd go look at old pairs of skis to get ideas.

It’s relatively easy to make skis/snowboards properly. If you haven’t already taken a woodworking and metals class try it (I took a bunch of shop monkey classes in college, best memories of the college workload)

Errrr just read you will not be in school, honestly if you take a community college class in wood or furniture making you will have access to a full shop and many student discounts on material. Maybe take one class and then use the shop for open lab.

I’m about halfway complete on a snowboard project but resources have stalemated me for over a year.
I’ll be getting the ax at the end of the month and might just take a one credit independent study for shop use, alumni benefits ;)

yea im kind of familiar with woodworking...and its sounding more and more liek ill be making wooden old school skis, which would still be kind of badass...maybe old school ones, but give them twintips

^holy crap, just looked closer at that auction - i have a pair of the K2 710-FO's hanging on my wall. they even [had - until i broke them off] the little orange wings on the front to prevent from crossing the tips.

Yeah, www.Grafsnowboards.com is by far the best resource on the web for making skis and snowboards. The free download of their CAD programme will make your life MUCH easier and there's lots of good info on their forum.

I have all the materials to make some skis; they will be costing around GB£135 per pair for materials (hopefully a bit less if I use less of the very expensive, high-performance epoxy). You should be able to make some for not much more than that in dollars because there are loads more people who supply the expensive bits (edges, p-tex) in the US but only one person here (and he knows it). If you don't want the best ash for your cores they'll be cheaper too :) . I haven't made my skis yet (prolly won't for a while) but I wouldn't have got into it if I thought they would suck.

You'll need a press of some kind too. That can be cheap or expensive depending on how complicated you want it to be. For a couple of pairs of skis you should ba able to get by with a simple one that costs $50-$100. Personally I'd try to get the vacuum pump out of an old refrigerator and use that - I think for the home builder that'll give the best results. Good luck with it!
