Sumo users, How do you like you sticks?

The best way to cure depression is to buy some stuff. At least all the chicks say so..

Been intrested in theese sticks this winter.
Now that i finally parting with my gotamas (little bit too much overlap with my im.103s) i am looking for something big.

Since i am on the old continent and our snow isnt as blessed as in u.s.a, i was
looking for a bit shorter sticks,that would have some sidecut in them too.
Weird,huh?

The reason for shorter skis is the bushfucking that you are bound to do after a while here, in the search of polvo.
And the sidecut would make the moving around a bit more intresting than with lotuses or pontoons.

So, sumoists : How have the skis been? Worth a buy?

I had a pair for a couple weeks but just traded them to Huckwheat for his gf to use.

I skied on them tele and didn't like them but I'm sure it's due to their length. I'm 210 and my everyday tele is a 184 Mantra (the 191 would be better but Volkl was sold out) and everyday for alpine is 200 FFLs and 185 Karmas depending on where I'm skiing. I haven't tried toons, spats or DPs so I don't know what the nontraditional shapes feel like.

The Sumos seemed short (they are-175) and are the shortest skis I've tried in awhile. The float was great as it should be for a 125 waisted ski. The flex was awesome for the pow. They were a touch stiffer than I thought they would be-stiffer than the Sanouks in the tips but not by much and definitely softer than Mantras overall. The tail felt a lot like some ARVs I used to tele on but you could tell the Sumos were 2 cm wider.

They got deflected a lot in chopped and anything setting up but I'm guessing they were floating over stuff instead of breaking through plus the softer flex but these are not crud skis. Getting back to the chair on groomers was fine but I wouldn't want to ski groomers all day.

I did get to ski 15 or so inches of untracked for a few runs and I think if these were longer (190 coming out 06/07), this would be my go to powder ski and could see replacing my Sanouks for alpine stuff as well as tele. I tend to ski longer turns and like to surf in the deeper snow so can't comment on bushwhacking but I think the 175 might be good for that. They did look dead sexy mounted with Bishops though. Overall, they did what they were designed to do and did it well but I would only use them as a quiver ski for deep and I would definitely want the 190. If you are into the 175 and looking for a pure powder ski, do it up. If 190 is your thing, wait until next year but they seem to be a great powder ski depending on what length you are looking for.

these are the specs for next year as provided by Squaretail (see below)

the turn radius is quite small (28.5m) if his specs are true, even smaller than the Gotama

squaretail, can you confirm that this radius is true...seems out of whack

Power Construction...same as Gotama. No metal.
Same stiffness as last year's Sumo...slightly softer than a Gotama.

Looks like the old vex/gotama shape plus 20/30mm:

Old Vex: 120-95-112 radius = 35 in 190
Old Got: 130-105-122 radius ~= 32 in 190
Sumo: 150-125-142 radius ~= 29 in 190

So the radius seems correct given the softer flex.

As soon as everyone loves it, Volkl will add more sidecut :rolleyes:

Thinking of getting some 175s for the wife. She currently skis a 168 Phat Luv. I've got some Prophet 130s and love the float, something I want her to experience.

She's 120lbs and doesn't ski super hard but has great technique. Is the Sumo too much for her???

How about the difference in edge length between the long Sumo and the 130? I missed a chance to compare them when I was travelling with someone who had a pair of the 190's. As much as I love my Prophet's I'd go for a square tail, non-twinned 125-130 ski in a 190-195 if someone made one. It'd be like a super Sanouk but with more stiffness, maybe 36-38 meter radius.

Anyone?

I think my 130s ski short, haven't skied the 190 Sumos yet but in the lift yesterday the 190 didn't seem that much longer... Word is they rock, should get to ski them next week...

I'll reconfirm when I get back to the office, but I'm pretty sure that is correct. The wider tail is what helps keep the radius fairly tight.

No 190's available for sale yet. Sadly, MAB had one of the few pairs with him this week.

BTW, that picture shows a cosmetic mock up. The real graphic is much cleaner looking than that.

i've put 10-15 days on my Sumo's this year.... and they flat out rock.

i am 150lbs ex-racer, ski academy, NCAA Div 1 skier etc.... so i have pushed these skis pretty hard in Tahoe where i ski. in 10" or more, these have been my go-to ski for the pow. a couple of days ago i was on some skinny skis in some deep pow and was REALLY missing my Sumos.

groomers? they hold an edge surprisingly well. i wouldn't use them for an icy slalom course... but on some steep chutes that had slid due to avys, these skis were able to hold a solid edge. in the pow and trees? these skis are $$$$. very easy to toss around and butter the turns if necessary. i have so many good memories from this season, maching thru pow filled trees....

cut up and mush.... well, they can handle it. there is some deflection but you get used to it and learn the ski's limits. they are not going to make some mashed potato mogul field feel like a groomer run.

hucking? pretty good... i am not really into hucking, but a few times this year, i found myself launching 20' airs, and these skis made it so easy to land, it was ridiculous. definitely gives you the confidence to go bigger.

the 175 size? for me, i like skis around 180-185 cm. i think if this Sumo were 180, it would be the PERFECT powder ski for me. 190? eh... prolly too much work, but still doable. in any case, for you bigger guys.... i think the 190 Sumo will be $$$$.

i haven't skiied the 130s.... but i did spend last season the Spatulas... and the Sumos win. Spatulas were too sketchy when it wasn't pow, and i had to take a groomer back to the lift. maybe i am old school.... but sometimes i actually like to CARVE my ski and the Sumos do that on a groomer, where the Spats don't.

anyhoo.... that's enough of my review. i've been testing skis the last couple of days and just came back from Casa Baeza... after a couple of margaritas... so i am full of Sumo techno bullshit :biggrin: . hope that helps!

The ski sounds just about what i am looking for.

Conondrum, yeah i understand that you might find the sticks to short. I´m personally quite much skinnier, so i hope that they would float my boat. And since i am maybe looking for a bit more "turnable" skis than my 103s, they could fit the bill by your description.

So, now it is just about ordering the sticks...

Had a quick run on the 190 Sumos today... seemed good, more life than my Prophets but hard to give a review skiing some slushy moguls. Let's see what the summer brings, maybe I can afford / justify a pair...

Oh, by the way?

Squaretail,if you run across the designers, hug them for a for a beautifull design, but punch them in the neck after that.Hard.

I mean, you can scratch the surface with your fingernails, so how do you think they´ll look after a season??

Stiffness seemed to be a bit stiffer than my ex-gotamas.
Soft tip,suprisingly stiff underfoot, and not a noodle tail.
Not bad.

Now it´s just to wait for the day i can ski them...




Edit: Uuh, and i put those 180cm explosivs as a reference.Not bad for a 175cm ski.
