Red Mountain Pass = $$$ today (sorry, no pics)
So, my stormchasing ways got the best of me yet again. On monday we headed up to berthoud to get out of town and camp for the hell of it. Before leaving town we checked the weather and got a topo of the red mountain pass area. Stayed at berthoud on monday night, did a few laps yesterday morning then we headed for red mountain pass. Had a strange feeling about the weather and my whole "not having a plan is the best plan" mentality took over. We get there in the afternoon and do a short scouting tour before dark. The snow moved in around 5 and continued to puke all night (we slept in the truck on the summit). Woke up this morning to about 16"+ on the road and 24"+ up higher. Did one tour and didn't really find much in the blowing snow and zero visibility. Above TL was total vertigo and would prove to be unsafe, so any above TL ideas we had were toast. By this point we are soaked after being in the hardcore pukage all morning (and night) and decide one last effort at a short but sweet sheltered slope in fairly open trees. Too steep to skin up so we booted till we felt like booting.
Anyway, B-L-O-W-E-R....best face shots of the year for me.....snow had super low density and basically during the whole run we could not see anything....there were no coming up for air at all....just 8 foot high smoke spheres surrounding us.
Was definately a spatula day, but I decided to try out my new Kingswood mid-fats anyway. They kick major fucking ass. Get some. End of story.
worst day to not have a camera
sorry, you read all of that
