Going to Nelson from Feb 13-16. Would love some suggestions about where to stay. Will be with my gf. Also, since it is Valentine's weekend, a suggestion of a nice/quiet restaurant with veggie/fish options would be great. Finally, a place with great morning coffee/breakfast.
Thanks for any info! Hopefully meet some of you locals dudes for a drink and some turns.

whitewater is your best bet. and the best western in town in nice (i'm serious). and go to the hot spring spa north of town. and go to the mexican resturant across from the best western. and buy mushroom chocolates.

I'm not much help in the where to stay dept. cause I stay at home. I'd offer to let you stay there but it sounds like you want quiet. Three kids do not make for quiet. OK, I'll offer anyways. Nelson is LOADED with good restaurants. There used to be a good one called Rice bistro but it changed owners and is now called Rice. Don't go there, it blows. There's a really good veggie restaurant behind "The Sacred Ride" (bike/board shop) I can't remember the name right now but it is good. Mazatlans is a good Mexican restaurant. When I got for dinner in Nelson my biggest problem is where to eat. "Allyway cafe" (I think that is it's original name I can't remember it's current name) is really good. I'll go and test a couple out for you this month & give you the low down.
Hot spring spa north of town = Ainsworth hotsprings.

Here's what I know after four years wroth of trips. We stay at the Heritage Inn every year on the bookends of our cat trip. It's a cool victorian hotel that could use some more water pressure, but it's right downtown and an easy walk to everything. Besides, it reminds me of the great hotels in Durango and that's a good thing in my book.

Mazatlan is the place to get your drink on as the margarita's are top notch and the mexican food is some of the best I've found anywhere outside the SW.
Can't say that I've ever had breakfast outside of the hotel as it's part of the room deal and decent. Coffee shops abound downtown so caffination should not be an issue.

Stayed in Nelson a couple years ago at the Heritage Inn ... good place and the rates include a sweet breakfast (poached eggs, etc....not yer usual continental style) I have fuzzy memories of too many marguaritas at the Mazatlan.

Not much to add to what's already been said. Oso Negro I believe is the coffee spot in town.
Best Western looked nice (next to Dancing Bear, right on Baker St.), Heritage probably has more character.
Mmm ... Mazatlan.
You know, our bill from that night was just under $900 CDN (w/ tip), and like $250 was in margaritas :D
Any advice on best relatively close place to do some standby cat skiing would be great too unless I just sled with Beav or sumthin.

Valhalla has been the maggot hook up though Blad Face is also a viable option. Retallack has standby spaces but is a bit of a trek for a day trip. IF the snow is dumping don't even bother as the touring from WH20 is outstanding.
Another vote for the Heritage Inn. It has character and it's not that expensive. Make sure to pick up some beer from the Nelson Brewing Company - very tasty stuff.
the runs i was shown at WH2O were as good or better than what we got with retallack, and way better than valhalla (of course that was just one trip)

Pick up a bottle of "Maudite." it comes in 750ml bottle & is 8% alcohol. Very tasty beer from Quebec.
Ainsworth Hot Springs is about halfway between Nelson and Retallack. I've stayed there and skied WH2O as well as Retallack from there.
I'd recommend it highly.

Thanks for the info fellas. Heritage Inn was full, so I booked at Best Western. Psyched to see Nelson in the winter.
The Best Western was just bought by the same family that owns the Heritage. I'd say more bout the accomodations, but you've already booked at a good spot.
Food- The Outer Clove (Garlic delights), The Redfish Grille (everything at reasonable price, I often eat here), The KC Rest./Kurama Sushi Rest (Chinese, but has an awesum Suishi Bar, in fact I think they sell more sushi, than chinese, quircky to find Japanese and Chinese in the same place, but hell, this is Nelson), Rice (contrary to what Beaver said, which was true, but they got their act together now), Max & Irmas (or as we like to say here Tax A Dermas, as it is in an old funeral home- their specialty- Rack O Man:eek: ,ha,ha. Actually is a good spot, wood fired oven. Sorry couldn't help myself), Cafe Danube (Eastern European, Crepes ect), Baba's Indian Cuisine (The name says it, very good. It is where we ate Italian two years ago fellers), All Seasons (top notch, a little more expensive, great wine list), The Mazatlan (Good, but not what it once was, my homemade margs are as good now)
Cat Skiing- Valhalla takes day trippers, Retallack I think does days, Baldface I believe is three days minimum, Snowater Crk maybe and Wild Horse yes days, but I think it is for touring assist and check the other post on Nelson Cat Skiing about it.
Call me when your in town and if I'm not off shooting, I'll show you round WH2O.

Local Honey Brew... don't remember the exact name of it (cause i've been out drinking for a few hours) but it's incredibly good. Been trying to break laws and import it for several months now with no luck so far... damn laws. [/several edits to not make this a drunk post]
